  1. The DC live-action universe has been making some major steps forward over the past few years, pivoting after the box office disappointment of Justice League. There's some very exciting blockbusters coming down the pipeline over the next years, following the release of Birds of Prey. Chief among them is Matt Reeves' The Batman, which is about to finally kick up production. Reeves assembled a killer cast to occupy Gotham City, including Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman. Although she recently explained why she's a bit nervous for the role. Zoe Kravitz' star power has been steadily growing over the past few years, and she's had roles in major productions like Mad Max: Fury Road and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in addition to her work on HBO's Big Little Lies. She recently opened up about her highly anticipated debut as Selina Kyle/Catwoman in The Batman, and was honest about her trepidation. When asked if she was nervous to join the DCEU, Kravitz said: Definitely, I was excited when I got the role, and usually when you get a job the people who are excited about it are you, your parents, your agent, your friends and that’s kind of it. But when the press release came, I got more text messages and calls than I’ve gotten on my birthday, on my wedding day. All of a sudden, the reality began to sink in about what this means not only to me, but to everybody else culturally — and the fans of this universe are so dedicated and opinionated. Well, that was honest. The comic book genre comes with a ton of pressure, as the characters mean a great deal to the rabid fanbase. This type of pressure is especially prevalent when it comes to Batman, as the Dark Knight is arguably the most popular superhero of all time.
  2. It seems like Parasite just can’t stop winning. Fresh off its huge and well-deserved Best Picture victory at the Oscars, Bong Joon-ho’s genre-bending exploration of socioeconomic disparity is picking up fans left and right. And that’s thanks in part to a huge box office boost. This weekend, the film began screening in 941 additional theaters, expanding its total presence to 2,001 screens across the United States. That amounts to a 234.2% increase – easily the biggest of the week. That should come as no surprise, as Parasite has generated a huge amount of attention following its historic wins for Best Foreign Film, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture at the 2020 Academy Awards. And this increase in theaters will only help the movie build on its already impressive box office legacy. Since it won the Palme d’Or at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Parasite has defied expectations. Propelled by great word of mouth, it was popular with cinephiles the moment it began a limited release in the United States. Buzz about its amazing cast and twisty plot led to even more interest. Last November, it became the highest grossing foreign film of 2019. To date, it’s grossed $44.3 million in the United States, and $175.3 million worldwide. As it began to pick up momentum during award season, fans online slowly but surely joined the BongHive – a group of enthusiastic fans of the film’s legendary director. And that was all before the Oscar buzz. Parasite is the first film not in the English language to take home the Best Picture Oscar. It’s an impressive feat, made even more astonishing when you factor in that it’s the first film from South Korea to ever even be nominated at the Academy Awards. Since its surprise victory, there has been some debate as to whether or not the film’s subtitles would deter from moviegoers enjoyment. But it seems as though theater owners, at least, are willing to increase its availability so that people can decide for themselves. And the visibility to Parasite won’t stop there. The film is already available for home viewing on DVD and Blu-ray and streaming services, and Criterion Collection announced it will be distributing it as well. And shortly after it took home a Golden Globe for Foreign Language Film, HBO announced it was working with Bong Joon-ho to develop an English adaptation as a limited series. That news was met with some backlash from fans of the film, who feel that it doesn’t need to be retooled for an American audience. We don’t yet know if the TV series will be a sequel, a remake, or something else entirely. But if nothing else, it indicates that Parasite’s legacy will continue to capture our attention for the foreseeable future.
  3. Funny, when people think of an actor likely to die on screen, they usually think of Sean Bean. He's famous for it. But instead, it's his Game of Thrones nephew/son who is apparently most likely to take the hit. Kit Harington was given the highest odds to die in a movie. Is that a bad sign for his character in Marvel's The Eternals, Dane Whitman a.k.a. Black Knight? The Kit Harington on-screen death statistic comes from Movie Mortality. According to the site, Danny Trejo is the actor who has had the most movie deaths so far at 65. Percentage-wise, though, Kit Harington is said to be the most likely actor to die on screen. He hasn't even been in that many movies -- his filmography includes Silent Hill: Revelation, Pompeii, Testament of Youth, Seventh Son, Spooks: The Greater Good, Brimstone, The Death & Life of John F. Donovan, and two How to Train Your Dragon movies. But, based on the methodology used by Movie Mortality, Kit Harington has a 62.5% chance of dying in a movie. That put him at #1 on the list of Top 10 Actors Most Likely To Die On-Screen. It put him ahead of Merritt Butrick, Mahershala Ali, Mickey Rourke, Dave Bautista, Michael Biehn, Gary Oldman, Taylor Kitsch, Holt McCallany, and -- there he is! -- Sean Bean, who was given a 42.3% chance of dying. That's just for actors. For actresses, A.J. Cook is the most likely to die on screen with a 50% chance of death. It's a fascinating but macabre way of looking at cinematic history. What does it mean for Kit Harington's next movie, The Eternals? Maybe it'll actually help lower his percentage. Back in August 2019, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige hinted to Harington lasting a long time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: He’s a really amazing actor, and this part came up in The Eternals film that we’re doing. We were so happy when he agreed to join, and it is a part that could perhaps grow into something else in the future. That sounded really hopeful for Kit Harington's post-Eternals future as Dane Whitman, who might be more like Jon Snow than the Game of Thrones star wanted. Related Marvel's Black Knight: Kit Harington's Eternals Character Explained Kit Harington said he was excited and terrified to join the MCU, which sounds like the sane response. It's a massive undertaking and he knows about huge fan pressure from Game of Thrones. Marvel.com has an official page up for The Eternals, with this synopsis on the story: Marvel Studios' The Eternals features an exciting new team of Super Heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind's most ancient enemy, The Deviants. Yes, it's confirmed to explore what happens after Avengers: Endgame. (Unlike Black Widow, although that will still have to connect the dots to The Eternals, right?) Here's everything you need to know about the Deviants. Black Widow, which opens May 1, and The Eternals are the only two MCU movies for 2020. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had to be delayed when James Gunn was fired then rehired. But the MCU does have fun plans on the Disney+ front with both The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and -- cannot wait for this -- WandaVision coming this year. The Eternals only recently finished filming, and among other things it will include Marvel's first major same-sex relationship. But the biggest chatter so far has been about Kumail Nanjiani's surprising physical transformation, giving him Pornhub "Muscular Men" status. The Eternals also stars Kit Harington's on-screen brother (sort of) Richard Madden, whose Robb Stark was actually the one to die in Game of Thrones. Jon Snow got to live on with Tormund. Technically, Jon Snow did die and came back to life. But, also technically, since GoT is not a movie, it might not count. The Eternals also stars Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Lia McHugh, Don Lee, and Barry Keoghan. Directed by Chloé Zhao, The Eternals opens in theaters on November 6, 2020. That's when we'll know if it did or did not kill Kit Harington's character. I'm guessing not, but we'll see.
  4. In just a few months, John Cena will make his long-awaited and highly anticipated debut in the Fast And Furious Franchise where he will portray series protagonist Dominic Toretto’s long-lost (and unknown) brother Jakob in Fast And Furious 9, or F9 as it has been alternatively titled. Cena’s debut to the action series is long overdue, and it’s shocking that it took this long for one of the WWE’s most prominent stars to find his way to one of the most successful film franchises of all time. This probably won’t come as a surprise for anyone, but I think John Cena and Fast And Furious are a match made in cinematic heaven. The two entities have pretty much rocked their respective worlds for essentially the first 20 years of the 21st Century, brought millions of fans entertainment, and have made enough money to fill up those bank vaults from Fast Five. Here are just a few of the reasons why John Cena is a perfect addition to the Fast And Furious family. The Rock and John Cena cut a promo at Wrestlemania 32 John Cena Has Had One Of The Greatest Careers In Wrestling History Although he doesn’t have the same name recognition and cultural relevance as, say, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, or The Rock (more on him later), John Cena has had the most successful wrestling career of the 21st Century and is up there as one of the greatest in the history of sports entertainment. Since his debut with WWE in 2002, Cena has racked up dozens of title reigns, millions of dollars, and has met with over 600 kids through the Make-A-Wish program. He’s a household name and brings a little something for kids and adults alike. It doesn’t matter if wrestling fans love him or hate him, Cena has been able to consistently get a response out of everyone. During live events where Cena appears, entire arenas break out in dueling “Let’s Go Cena/Cena Sucks” chants throughout his entrances, matches, and while he’s walking back up the ramp. People love to hate Cena as much as they love to love him. With the responses he has gotten from wrestling fans throughout his career, it’s no surprise that Cena followed the path laid out by Hulk Hogan, Roddy Piper, and The Rock did before him. He went to Hollywood...
  5. For nearly a decade now, there have been reports floating around of a potential Scarface remake. While there are folks who see the 1983 Al Pacino movie as an untouchable classic, Hollywood producers have made several attempts to get a new retelling of this crime drama in theaters. Alas, despite several headlines saying that a Scarface remake is coming, we haven't seen any real progress made to get it off the ground. It's been mostly false starts, but it does raise two big questions. Specifically, will we get another remake Scarface? And more importantly, should we get another Scarface remake? The answer is complicated. Let's explore the history of this proposed Scarface remake, then ask ourselves if we even need it. Photo From Scarface (1932) A New Scarface Is Announced In 2011, With David Ayer And David Yates Attached The first plans to make a new Scarface were revealed back in 2011. At that time, Universal wanted to make a new version of Scarface that wouldn't be a sequel nor a straight remake of either the popular 1983 version or the original 1932 version, but rather a film that combines the story of both of them into one new re-imagining, centered around the story of a man that turns into a kingpin in his attempt to live out the American Dream. It was set to be produced by Martin Bregman, who produced the 1983 version. And it was set to be scripted by David Ayer, who was better known for writing Training Day at this time, and David Yates, who had recently helmed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2, was on board to direct it.
  6. What happens when you make a mystery comedy starring Daniel Craig as a slick Southern gentleman sleuth? Well, if you’re writer/director Rian Johnson and the movie happens to be Knives Out, you go on to make $300 million worldwide (and counting) and spawn a sequel that fans couldn’t have asked for quicker. Obviously, it’s going to take some time to put together the script to a potential Knives Out 2, and even if Johnson had one ready to go at this very moment, we wouldn’t hear any details about what it entails until Lionsgate felt good and ready to promote the film. Which means it’s time for some good old fashioned speculation! We’ve previously run stories on speculation pertaining to the title of what is commonly called Knives Out 2, as well as the potential casting and other factors we’d love to see in this follow up. Now, all that seems left to talk about is what crime should be committed in the name of entertainment. Below, you’ll see seven potential crimes that we’d love to see famed detective Benoit Blanc try to solve. Think of this as a bunch of donuts, with smaller donuts nested in them, just waiting for that tiny donut hole known as the truth to be placed in the center. But keep in mind, murder isn’t the only crime a talented sleuth could find themselves in the middle of solving.
  7. Harrison Ford exists somewhere on the Hollywood spectrum beyond “Legendary” status. That’s what happens when you play the likes of Han Solo, Indiana Jones, Rick Deckard and countless more roles over the course of a career. You’re an instant icon. Of course, it also means that you have to answer questions about these roles for the rest of your life. That’s the cross to bear. So it’s pretty adorable to watch Ford answering this question about Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, and possibly believe that maybe he played Superman at one point in his career? The question comes from FOX 32 entertainment reporter Jake Hamilton, who also co-hosts the ReelBlend Podcast here on CinemaBlend. Hamilton is a super-fan for Star Wars, and used some time on the Call of the Wild junket to ask Ford about the iconic “I know reply” to Carrie Fisher. That’s when this happened.
  8. There's no need to cry for Avengers: Endgame, but it did just make Oscars history in a sad trombone way. Turns out, it's the first film to hold the title of highest-grossing movie of all time and not win a single Academy Award. Always a trend-setter, that Marvel Cinematic Universe! Avengers: Endgame was only nominated for one 2020 Oscar, and that's after Disney's whole campaign submitted 13 actors in the cast "for your consideration." It just got the one nomination -- Best Visual Effects. It didn't even win that award, the honor went to 1917 (which lost Best Picture, despite being considered a frontrunner going into the show). So Avengers: Endgame walked away with no trophies -- but, of course, Marvel still has those piles and piles of cash. Still, this is an opportunity for James Cameron to smirk a little, since both of his #1 movies in the world won multiple Oscars. Titanic was nominated in 14 categories in 1998 -- a tie with All About Eve for the most nominations, at the time -- and it won 11 Oscars -- a tie with Ben-Hur for the most wins by a single movie, at the time. One of those many wins was Best Picture. James Cameron's Avatar, which just lost the highest-grossing title to Avengers: Endgame last summer, was also nominated for Best Picture during its Oscars ceremony in 2010. It did not win, and James Cameron didn't get the Best Director Oscar that time, but Avatar did win Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, and Best Cinematography. It was also nominated in several other categories, including Film Editing, Score, and the two sound categories. Of course, whenever anyone talks about Avengers: Endgame or Avatar as the highest-grossing movies, you have to mention that's not adjusting for inflation over the years. When we do adjust for inflation, Gone with the Wind is still the winner. That movie swept the 1940 Oscars with a record at the time of 13 nominations, picking up eight wins, including "Outstanding Production." On that adjusted gross list, the first Star Wars movie is actually still above Avengers: Endgame. The "adjusted" list of highest-grossing movies is currently Gone with the Wind, Avatar, Titanic, Star Wars, Avengers: Endgame, The Sound of Music, E.T., The Ten Commandments, Doctor Zhivago, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Most of those movies were also at one point in time the highest-grossing movie ever made. However, there are other films that held that title at one point but aren't on the top 10 all-time adjusted list. And they DID win Oscars, unlike Avengers: Endgame. Jurassic Park, Jaws, and The Godfather all belong on that highest-grossing-at-the-time/Oscar-winning list. By the way, never mind James Cameron -- give it up for Steven Spielberg for having three movies that were the highest-grossing movies of all time at one point AND they all won Oscars. That's E.T., Jurassic Park, and Jaws for him. Fandom helpfully created a chart to show Avengers: Endgame's place in history as the only King Of The World to not get any love from the Academy:
  9. When Matt Reeves revealed a teaser of The Batman this week, fans were thrilled to get their first glimpse of Robert Pattinson in the batsuit. But it also offered an intriguing taste of one of the most important parts of any Batman film -- the iconic batsuit. Though Matt Reeves’ footage featured plenty of close-ups, it also left one crucial piece to fan artists’ -- what the suit will look like in full color. The Batman’s director shared a video on Twitter on February 13. Just under a minute long, the clip - entitled “The Batman - Camera Test” offers a dramatic close-up look at Robert Pattinson in Bruce Wayne’s iconic batsuit (and a hint at Michael Giacchino’s powerful, foreboding score for the film!). But since the footage has a red tint to it, Matt Reeves strategically kept us in the dark where the overall coloring of the suit is concerned. But luckily, some talented fan artists were happy to let their imaginations run wild. Though none of the images they created are in any way official, they do offer up some idea of what we might expect. On Twitter, artist BossLogic shared several renderings of what he imagined a full color view of what the new batsuit might look like. His first idea keeps the suit entirely in monochrome, which definitely seems feasible given the darker tone Matt Reeves struck with his first footage.
  10. Over the past several years, Disney has focused a lot of energy on reimaginings and adaptations of its beloved films. Now, it looks like we’re in for yet another fairytale remake, albeit possibly with a bit of a twist. A decade after the release of Tangled, the studio appears to be hard at work on a live-action version of Rapunzel. It’s not clear whether this new adaptation, revealed by The DisInsider, will follow in the footsteps of Disney’s original version of the long-haired princess’ story, or take a new approach. Though it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea for the studio to leverage Tangled’s popularity. Released in 2010, the animated film -- starring the voices of Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, and Donna Murphy -- was a huge hit, grossing $593 million worldwide. The film’s sustained popularity was enough to spawn a short film, a television film, and an animated series for the Disney Channel. Tangled also diverged heavily from the Brothers Grimm’s original Rapunzel story, which sees the young girl trapped in her tower until a prince climbs her hair and tries to rescue her. The 2010 film gives Rapunzel a lot more agency, casting her as the long lost princess of Corona, and letting her spend the majority of the film outside of her tower. (To be fair, that’s a lot more empowering and relevant to a 21st century audience.) There are few details about how Disney will approach its latest Rapunzel adaptation. The studio is reportedly looking for a director to helm the film, which appears to be set for a wide release as opposed to a direct-to-Disney+ streaming release. If it moves forward, it will mark the latest in a slew of live action adaptations, both for the big screen and for Disney+.
  11. Ah, the Fast And Furious franchise. Some will argue that it didn’t really get good until Fast 5. While others will argue that the series needs to get back to its racing roots, a la, Fast 1-3. And the less we talk about Fast & Furious (number 4), the better. But with F9 coming out in May, we thought it might be interesting to talk about how the Fast And Furious series could actually improve, and we need to look no further than the MCU for inspiration. While you might think there is no connection between Marvel’s cinematic universe and the Fast films, we’d beg to differ. Both feature larger than life characters, and both are really just live-action cartoons if we’re being completely honest with ourselves. But where the MCU is flourishing, the Fast series seems to be a little stagnant, which is kind of odd for a film series that is all about momentum and speed. But here are a few ways that the Fast series can learn from the MCU. Beep beep, vroom vroom!
  12. Blake Lively’s latest film The Rhythm Section just can’t catch a break. It battled numerous delays on its way to the big screen, only to be met with poor reviews, and a dismal opening weekend. And now it’s already losing about 96 percent of its screens in just its third weekend after release. The thriller opened in 3,049 theaters on January 31. Per Exhibitor Relations Co., this weekend, The Rhythm Section will be screening in just 94 across the whole country. And that’s after suffering the indignity of setting a new record as the movie with the worst wide-opening of all time at just $2.8 million. In other words, it could already be nearing a mercifully quick end to its domestic run. To date, The Rhythm Section has grossed approximately $5.8 million against its $50 million budget. That makes it a bonafide box office bomb. And clearly, Paramount Pictures doesn’t see much of a chance for it to find new legs in theaters. Maybe it will enjoy a second life during a home release. (There’s no harm in looking for a silver lining, right?) What went wrong for the film? Basically everything, if we’re being honest. The Rhythm Section faced a lengthy delay in production after Blake Lively injured her hand during a stunt gone wrong. It also had its release pushed back multiple times. When it finally hit theaters, most critics weren’t exactly impressed, leveling it with just a 27% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Moviegoers were equally unenthused, if its C+ grade on CinemaScore is any indication. SUBSCRIBE TO OUR NEWSLETTER Sign up below to receive our weekly email with the best content about movies, news and television from the team at CinemaBlend ENTER EMAIL ADDRESS Despite an overall lackluster response, Blake Lively has been praised for her performance in The Rhythm Section. And that’s good news for the actress, as the film marks one of her most ambitious roles to date. She took an active role in promoting the thriller, trying to entice fans with a mysterious social media campaign. One of the more notable elements of the film was the fact that her character undergoes several big transformations in her appearance -- and that was something that helped raise awareness about the film as well. But obviously not enough. As of yet, Blake Lively doesn’t seem to have any post-The Rhythm Section projects up her sleeve. But all isn’t lost. In The Shallows, the actress proved she has what it takes to lead a film successfully -- even when she’s basically the only person on camera. So more than anything, she just needs to find the right project. There is also no word as to what the next steps are in The Rhythm Section’s sad story. Paramount Pictures could rush to put it on streaming services, but it has yet to announce an official date when it will be available for home viewing.
  13. Sometimes, it seems like we’ll never actually get to see the long-promised Uncharted movie. The adaptation of Naughty Dog’s uber-popular video game franchise has been in development pretty much forever. Luckily, Tom Holland has thrown us a bone -- and confirmed that there’s not only a new script for the film, but that it’s pretty great. The Spider-Man actor has been tied to Uncharted since last June, back when it was originally scheduled to be released in December of 2020. Since then, the film has seen some upheaval behind the scenes, which seems to have pushed the film back to a 2021 release date. Though Tom Holland is busy with his Marvel commitments, he still seems to be enthusiastic about taking on the role of Nathan Drake, thanks in part to his enthusiasm about the film’s script (via IGN): I read the newest draft of the script on the way over here and it's one of the best scripts I've ever read. It really, really jumps off the page. Tom Holland also confirmed that the Uncharted adaptation will serve as an origin story for his treasure hunter character, which should help make the film more appealing to fans of the video game as well as newcomers: SUBSCRIBE TO OUR NEWSLETTER Sign up below to receive our weekly email with the best content about movies, news and television from the team at CinemaBlend ENTER EMAIL ADDRESS I think what Uncharted offers that most video games films don't is that it's an origin story to the games… So if you played the games, you haven't seen what's going to happen in the film. And if you haven't played the games, you're going to enjoy the film because it's information that everyone else is getting at the same time. Spending some time with pre-games time with Nathan Drake, that means we’ll also get some quality time with his mentor, Victor Sullivan. Last November, Mark Wahlberg -- who was originally slated to star as Nathan in Uncharted many moons ago -- took on that role. And Tom Holland seems pretty geeked about working with him: I think Mark Wahlberg's going to kill it as Sully and it's going to be a lot of fun. It really sounds like things may finally be falling into place for Uncharted. But there is still at least one essential piece needed before the film can truly get up and running. Uncharted still doesn’t have a new director after Travis Knight, the second director in a year, exited the film due to Tom Holland’s scheduling conflicts. There are rumors Ruben Fleischer may take the reins -- but nothing official has been announced. At least we know whoever ends up in the director’s chair has a solid script to work with. Even though Uncharted won’t be hitting theaters this year, there are still plenty of amazing movies to look forward to. Check out our 2020 release guide to see for yourself.
  14. The official F9 trailer may have been worth that wildly over-the-top concert event premiere after all. Fast and Furious 9 timed its trailer reveal for Super Bowl weekend in Miami. Vin Diesel promoted the blazes out of it for over a month before it showed up. When the F9 trailer did arrive? Fireworks. Actually, choppers, cliff jumps, drives across a collapsing bridge, a Pontiac Fiero strapped to a rocket engine, a magnet plane, and ... Han! Somehow! Plus a few more returnees from past Fast movies. And it's adding John Cena as Dom Toretto's brother, Jakob. (Who is also Mia Toretto's brother? The trailer ignores that.) The surprise of seeing Han's return, never mind the other physics-defying visuals, led to a lot of buzz for the Fast and Furious 9 trailer. So much buzz that the F9 trailer amassed more than 500 million views across YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. Yep, it was a record-breaker. And since tickets were strategically put on sale the same day, those numbers are impressive too.
  15. For over three years, Indiana Jones 5 has been in and out of development. The script has been passed back and forth between a slew of writers, but finally its filming schedule is on track. According to Harrison Ford himself, he’ll grab his hat and whip and get back to work to continue to play his iconic role just a few months from now. And he’s also teasing Indy’s next adventure. Here’s what Ford said: Well, I’m not going to share the story with you because that doesn’t seem like a good idea. But we’ll see new developments in his life, his relationship. We’ll see part of his history resolved. Very coy. Harrison Ford isn’t one to spill the beans and he’s not doing it this time around for Indiana Jones 5 either. He doesn’t want to spoil the story, but he does drop a couple hints here. The 77-year-old Star Wars actor mentions development in his “relationship” and references some part of his past being resolved. This could certainly be the last Indiana Jones movie starring Harrison Ford, so one would expect it might wrap up plotlines from the archaeologist’s previous adventures. Just how remains to be seen. Will Karen Allen reprise her role as Marion Ravenwood? At the end of 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Indy and Marion get married.
