  1. After a delay of several months to accommodate a much-needed redesign of the titular character, Sonic the Hedgehog finally races into theaters this weekend. The Blue Blur is used to coming in first place but he will not be running unopposed in the race at the box office, he’ll be up against some other new releases, as well as a holdover in Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. So will Sonic the Hedgehog beat Birds of Prey at the box office this weekend? Harley Quinn is going to need to strap some rocket boosters to her roller blades because there’s pretty much no way she’s catching Sonic. The adaptation of the iconic Sega mascot is tracking to open with $40 million to $45 million from 4,130 locations over the four-day President’s Day weekend according to Variety. Those figures should allow to Sonic the Hedgehog to easily cross the finish line first, well ahead of the competition. A $40 to $45 million opening weekend is basically in line with the more recent tracking for Sonic the Hedgehog that had it pegged to debut with $41 million to $47 million. So that seems to be where things are trending, which is a much more positive outlook than this film previously had. Back at the beginning of the year, the long-range tracking for Sonic only anticipated a $20-$30 million four-day start. If the box office shakes out this way, with Sonic the Hedgehog coming in first place, it will be an impressive win, but a predictable one given the performance of Birds of Prey. Cathy Yan’s DC film opened last weekend well below expectations to $33.2 million. This race might have been closer if these films came out the same weekend, but given Birds of Prey’s inevitable drop in its second frame, Sonic will be the clear winner.
  2. Whether his time as The Joker in the DC Extended Universe is truly over or not, Jared Leto has already made the jump to another comic book character: Morbius, the Living Vampire. Morbius is set for release this summer, but as has become the norm for many blockbuster productions, the vampiric movie is in the midst of reshoots, which Leto revealed with the following post: https://www.instagram.com/p/B8cFGsFAHjK/?utm_source=ig_embed Here we have Jared Leto back on the Morbius set looking through an issue of Legion of Monsters, featuring the team where Morbius, the Living Vampire served alongside characters like Werewolf by Night and Man-Thing. Not that we should expect to see these characters pop up in Morbius… or can we?! Regardless, even though Leto has already spent a lot of time with one of Marvel’s most famous vampires, it doesn’t hurt to cram in some extra research as reshoots are underway, as he showed on Instagram. Morbius’ principal photography began at the end of February 2019 and went until June of the same year. We don’t know what these reshoots are specifically for, although I suspect if they were to drastically alter the story, akin to something like Rogue One or Justice League, reports about that would have surfaced. It’s likelier that Jared Leto and the Morbius team are just capturing a little extra footage to compliment/enhance everything that was shot last year.
  3. It’s fair to say Birds of Prey’s box office during Week 1 was disappointing, but what’s not fair is anyone operating on the assumption that Cathy Yan’s R-rated Harley Quinn movie is a total disaster at this point. In fact, worldwide it’s already made over $85 million, which is allegedly already more than its initial budget (more on how box office works later). So, I’d just like to take a second to point out some of the headlines you may have been reading can’t have told the whole story yet. The truth is, Birds of Prey had an opening weekend that was not as stellar as it was anticipated. It’s accurate to say opening weekend wasn’t even close to as stellar as conservative estimates expected the movie to be. It’s also likely that Sonic The Hedgehog will beat Birds of Prey at the box office this weekend. However, it’s also the truth that if Birds of Prey has a reasonable second weekend both domestically and worldwide, it could be on its way to making a profit, particularly given its budget and P&A weren’t as high as some other superhero fare. (In fact, most superhero movies at DC, excepting Joker and the similarly budgeted Shazam! cost more to make.) We can potentially talk about getting negative about the Birds of Prey IP in a few weeks, but for now hang on to your horses, ‘cause Lucy I’ve got some ‘splainin to do.
  4. The Oscars red carpet is often the best time before the ceremony for actors and filmmakers to express themselves – whether it be through jaw-dropping fashion or comments to the press about their opinions on the films being recognized during that year. Ahead of Sunday’s telecast, Natalie Portman showed off a magnificent gold and black Dior gown and cape that had a lot to say. Rose McGowan was not impressed with her activism.
