  1. A summary of the newly-announced Steam Deck's technical specifications reveals that it should perform competitively with the Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. The portable gaming console was recently announced by the Valve Corporation, the developer of software distribution platform Steam. Valve is also the developer of several iconic game series including Half-Life, Portal and Team Fortress. Today Valve announced the release date and price of the Steam Deck handheld console, a portable gaming platform which can run the extensive library of Steam games. The Steam Deck is being referred to as Switch-like, with the console's portable nature being similar to Nintendo's hybrid machine. The fully-functional portable PC utilizes traditional controller buttons, a pair of trackpads, a touchscreen, and four back buttons, to allow gamers to play PC games with even the most complex controls. Like its counterpart the Nintendo Switch, the Steam Deck can also be docked and connected to a television, although the Steam Deck's dock is sold separately. Valve's portable PC will ship in December 2021, and it will sell for $399. Steam Deck pre-orders begin on July 16, and gamers who are interested in the device are recommended to place their reservations as early as possible. Twitter user Iashman has shared an extensive comparison of the Steam Deck's specifications to rival consoles such as the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. The summary comes from Peter "Durante" Thoman, a popular developer and model, who posted the breakdown on Steam. Durante reveals that the Steam Deck's graphics processing unit is as fast as a PlayStation 4, but the newer architecture and smaller screen give it the same raw GPU performance as an Xbox Series X. The central processing unit is half that of an Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5, but the console's 16 gigabytes of random access memory is equal to that of a PS5 and four times that of the Nintendo Switch. While the Steam Deck is a new and exciting venture for Valve, it is not the company's first attempt at a console. In 2015 Valve released Steam Machines, a line of prebuilt gaming PCs with home console features such as customized Steam Controllers. The aim of the innovative consoles was to allow gamers to choose between different variations of the same basic hardware, but by 2018 Valve had removed Steam Machines from the storefront. The failure of the Steam Machines experiment may have been a setback for Valve, or it may have encouraged the company to continue developing the idea until the team created the Steam Deck. Valve's Steam Deck is an exciting announcement from a video game juggernaut that remained dormant for many years. The portable console will give gamers unlimited access to the entire Steam library right at their fingertips, with innovative controls to match any title. With performance power to match rival consoles, the Steam Deck may be Valve's next big success.
  2. The brand new map for Call of Duty's zombies mode just released, but already players are starting to report some issues. Season 4 of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War began on July 15, promising plenty of new content for its multiplayer, battle royale, and zombies modes. This included a brand new zombies map, which caused many fans to get excited about how the mode might change. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's Season 4 roadmap promised plenty of changes for zombies players. However, the biggest change was undoubtedly the promise of a new map. In early July, the Mauer Der Toten map was finally confirmed in a new trailer, showing off the new location. The trailer also featured several new (and returning) perks and weapons that would be coming to the zombies mode. There were also some teases of new, more powerful zombies that players would have to fight, building the suspense to play the new zombies map even more. Unfortunately, once the map was released, it seemed that the experiences were a bit lacking. According to Dexerto, several players on the Call of Duty subreddit have posted clips showing the map glitching out. For instance, Redditor JConz94 shows how their excitement to play the new map was undercut by all the issues. In the comments, JConz94 actually lists out all the glitches that they have encountered including the game freezing, not being able to hear the zombies, and parts of the map not loading at all. In another post, user TroyA7X85 shows how these portions of the map are not loading properly. After passing through a door to a new part of the map, TroyA7X85 finds that the next section of the map has no floor and they are walking on air. While other Call of Duty modes are well-known for their glitches, zombies is usually a much more stable game mode. Since the mode is not player versus player, there is less incentive to use cheats or exploit glitches to get an advantage. Instead, most of the changes needed for the zombies mode are either fixes for the rare bug or the introduction of brand new content, as was the case at the start of Season 4. Unfortunately, this does appear to be one of the rare instances where a glitch in Call of Duty's zombies mode is so widespread and game-breaking that it will need to be patched quickly. Whereas, in the past, glitches in the zombies mode have simply led to some odd but funny moments, having full areas of the map not even rendering is going to throw off the immersive experience. Hopefully, the glitch will be patched soon so players can get back to killing zombies.
  3. Nicolas Cage explained why he doesn't see himself returning back to Hollywood to make more movies. His most recent film, Pig, will be released in theaters on July 16. Directed and co-written by Michael Sarnoski and written by Vanessa Block, the film is set on truffle hunter Rob (Cage) in the wilderness of Oregon. When his foraging pig is kidnapped by unknown assailants, he must return back to Portland and face his past in order to search for his stolen pig. The film and Cage have both received high critical praise. After making his feature film debut in a small role in Fast Times at Ridgemont High in 1982, Cage's career has been rather expansive. He's starred in several big Hollywood films and has earned numerous awards for his work, including a Screen Actors Guild Award and an Academy Award for his performance in 1995's Leaving Las Vegas. However, his career later focused on more of the independent film scene with movies such as Pig and the Lovecraftian Color Out of Space. He has generated a large cult following, particularly due to his more over-the-top performances. In an interview with Variety, Cage talked about his character's journey in Pig and how relatable it is to some of his own experiences. He brought up leaving the Hollywood scene and how that compares to Rob leaving the spotlight of the Portland scene. Cage explored the topic of creative freedom as an actor, as well as the pressure of making a big budget Hollywood feature. See below for Cage's full comments: “I do feel that I’ve gone into my own wilderness and that I’ve left the small town that is Hollywood. I don’t know exactly why Rob left his stardom. It’s never fully explained, and I like that about the movie. But as for me, I don’t know if I’d want to go back. I don’t know if I’d want to go and make another Disney movie. It would be terrifying. It’s a whole different climate. There’s a lot of fear there.” “When I was making Jerry Bruckheimer movies back-to-back, that was just a high pressure game. There were a lot of fun moments, but at the same time, there was also ’We wrote this line. It has to be said this way. They’d put a camera on you and photograph you, and order you: ‘Now say the roller skate training wheels line.’ I’d say, ‘I’ll do that but I’d also like to try it this way.’ On independent movies, you have more freedom to experiment and be fluid. There’s less pressure and there’s more oxygen in the room.” Not all of Cage's movies have been regarded as winners, although many of them have led to the creation of memes online. His performance as Edward Malus in the 2006 remake of The Wicker Man is still often referred to, despite how bad the film itself is. While he doesn't currently seem to have much interest in returning back to Hollywood films, he still remains to be a large draw to the movies that he stars in. The fact that he brings attentions to what would otherwise be small projects is a big attribute. Cage delivers a subtle, controlled performance in Pig that is undeniably nuanced. This is a side to the actor that some audiences may have believed was gone entirely, although he's proven that he can go from the "Cage rage," as he refers to it, all the way to a deeply intimate performance. There's no doubt that he would be able to get back into Hollywood films if he were to have the desire, although there's something particularly special about Cage working in independent filmmaking. He has the ability to do more than read lines, but to truly immerse himself in a character on screen. Hopefully audiences are able to continue to see Cage display this dynamic range in his future projects.
  4. Josh Gad, who played LeFou in the live-action adaption of Beauty & The Beast and is due to return to the role in its upcoming spinoff series, gave a cryptic response regarding the character's much-discussed sexuality. The Disney+ adaptation of the 2017 blockbuster, which is titled Little Town, promises to address longstanding questions about main characters, Luke Evans' Gaston and Gad's LeFou. The characters both made their debut in 1991's animated incarnation of Beauty & The Beast. Its original adaptation bolstered various elements of the classic story, including the relationship between the antagonistic pair; given that Little Town takes place before the fabled "tale as old as time," it's an ideal opportunity for its creators to further delve into the backstory of the bumbling LeFou and his bawdy master Gaston. LeFou's evolution between versions of the French fairytale received much attention when director Bill Condon stated that the character would be gay in his film. Renowned for its family-friendly approach to storytelling, Disney has rarely addressed such themes in its movies, to the increasing ire of their critics. Given that LeFou's sexuality was all but ignored in the movie's final cut, causing even more consternation in the press, it seemed inevitable that any hints towards LeFou's feelings for his liege Gaston would remain just that. Gad's performance was hailed as one of the standout elements of the adaptation, and following various other big screen-to-small screen journeys of beloved Disney-owned properties, it was announced last year that he and Evans would revive their roles in a new eight-part adventure on Disney+. Recently speaking to the Just for Variety podcast (via Comicbook.com), Gad offered up a few cryptic clues about his celebrated character, and the new world LeFou inhabits. The actor, who also serves as one of the series' creators and writers, spoke of a commitment to challenge Little Town's source material. Gad's insights not only suggest an enigmatic approach to the exploration of LeFou's sexuality but also just how many elements of Little Town promise to surprise Disney+'s now 100 million-strong userbase when the prequel debuts early next year. Read below for what Gad said about the nature of the stories he's striving to tell: You’re going to have to tune in when this show airs to see what we’re working up, but in the process of working on it, we’re asking ourselves every relevant question about these characters and endeavoring to do right by them and by this world. I think that we have origin stories here that are unbelievably exciting because they’re unexpected. And I think ‘expect the unexpected’ is all I can really say. And not just with regard to LeFou and Gaston but to a lot of the new characters that we’re introducing. This statement follows Gad's previous comments about Little Town, in which he revealed that Gaston and LeFou wouldn't be the only characters embarking on a new adventure. The actor beamed about newcomer Brianna Middleton, who's playing a new character named Tilly, and director Liesel Tommy (Jessica Jones), who both seem to be contributing to Little Town's twists and turns beyond the tale of Belle and Prince Adam. Given that it will also feature new music from Alan Menken and Glenn Slater – composers on both versions of Beauty & the Beast, and The Little Mermaid and Tangled, respectively – its showrunners seem to be cherry-picking talent that will not only guarantee Little Town's subversive streak but its success too. Given Gad's frustration regarding the rampant speculation surrounding LeFou in his first live-action appearance, it's unsurprising that he would be eager to steer the conversation away from his sexuality. While traits of Disney's growing list of adaptations has been derided, it's clear that the company's interpretations of their classic properties have kept both the adaptations and the original movies firmly in the hearts of generations of fans. The discourse around homosexuality in mainstream media has evolved a great deal in the 30 years since LeFou was first introduced to audiences, and even since Beauty & the Beast's 2017 remake. If Gad gets his way, the character will finally get to speak for himself when Little Town debuts in early 2022.
  5. Olga Kurylenko, who plays Taskmaster a.k.a. Antonia Dreykov in Black Widow, is more than willing to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Black Widow introduces Taskmaster as the ultimate match for Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) because of the villain’s ability to instantly mimic anyone’s fighting style. Towards the end of the film, it is revealed that hidden behind the helmet of Taskmaster is Antonia Dreykov, General Dreykov’s daughter who had become collateral damage in Natasha’s mission to kill the leader of the Red Room years ago. While Dreykov escaped unharmed, the bomb blast severely disfigured Antonia. But instead of protecting her, Dreykov turned her into the perfect soldier by inserting a chip into her head and used a chemical mind-control agent to keep her under his thumb. But by the end, Natasha manages to use the antidote to the mind-control to free Antonia, following which she leaves with the other freed widows, Melina (Rachel Weisz), and Alexei (David Harbour). As the open-ended conclusion to her story in Black Widow leaves enough room for her comeback in the MCU, Kurylenko is more than willing to return. In a chat with Esquire, the Taskmaster actress, Olga Kurylenko, shared that the future of her character in the MCU depends on Marvel Studios and what they decide to do with her story. It is in their hands to make her “appear or disappear.” But Kurylenko confirmed that she enjoyed playing the character and as Black Widow barely touched Antonia’s backstory, she would love to return if the offer is ever pitched to her. Imagine I'd say, "No, I wouldn't." Would that be weird? Would you even believe me? Of course, I would. It'd be really cool. I'd love to. Though Black Widow was Scarlett Johansson’s last appearance as Natasha Romanoff, it doesn’t mean the other new characters the film introduced don’t have a future in the MCU. Florence Pugh is already slated to return as Yelena Belova in the upcoming Disney+ series, Hawkeye, and is probably destined to take forward the mantle of Black Widow. And hopefully, the same possibility exists for Kurylenko’s Taskmaster. While Antonia Dreykov may or may not appear in the series, there is still scope for her return in other Marvel projects. In the comics, Taskmaster is a part of the mini-group of superheroes Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is currently busy putting together as he was the one who trained John Walker into becoming the US Agent. Though the character’s origin story is different in the MCU, this could still be the future of Antonia. After all, when it comes to the MCU, no one’s story ever really ends.
