  1. The European Union will not accept threats from the United States in the talks to secure a permanent exemption from US tariffs on steel and aluminum, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has said. “I would like to reiterate the call that this exemption be made unconditional and permanent,” Juncker said as he presented the EU's budget at the European Parliament in Brussels on Wednesday. Donald Trump’s decision in March to impose a worldwide 25 percent tariff on steel imports and a 10 percent tariff on aluminum “cannot be justified on the basis of national security,” he said as cited by AP. The situation in which Washington and Brussels find themselves on the brink of a trade war “should not happen between allies,” the Commission’s head stressed. "We will continue our negotiations with the US, but we will refuse to negotiate under threat," Juncker said. The statement came a day after Trump prolonged the temporary exemption for the EU for another month, until June 1. EU hopes of a swift resolution to the tariff standoff with the US will most likely be in vain, Jeffrey Tucker, editorial director at the American Institute for Economic Research, told RT. “Trade war is what he [Donald Trump] intended from the moment he put his hand on the Bible and took the oath of office,” Tucker said, adding that the US President is only interested in creating new conflicts instead of resolving the old owns. He described Trump as “a convinced economic nationalist, who really believes in his heat that if he can create an American national machinery production that’s not dependent on Europe, Canada and the rest of the world – that this will somehow be good to America.” “Donald Trump believes in zero sum kind of world – it’s like either America wins or America loses,” the expert said. However, according to Tucker, if the trade war between the US and EU breaks out producers and consumers on both sides will be among the losers. The European Commission said in a statement on Tuesday that the US decision of just a month-long extension “prolongs market uncertainty, which is already affecting business decisions.” Earlier, the block warned that it may retaliate against the US tariffs by imposing its own $3.5 billion tax on American goods, including jeans, motorcycles and orange juice.
  2. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is facing criticism for plans to spend billions on space travel as his workers sleep in tents to save money and pee in bottles to avoid missing their daily work targets. Bezos, the world’s richest man, recently told Business Insider that the “only way” he sees how he can spend so much money is by converting his “Amazon winnings” into space travel. But Twitter has some other ideas about how Bezos could use his “winnings” to help improve the planet he actually lives on first. Some users suggested that Bezos could spend his money on schools, roads, healthcare and other public services before throwing billions at space travel. Amazon has repeatedly been criticized for poor treatment of its workers and failure to pay a real living wage. A 2017 investigation by an undercover reporter for the Daily Mirror found that workers at the retail giant are treated “like animals” and forced to work to the point of physical collapse. Another exposĂ© found that some of Amazon’s warehouses lacked air-conditioning and the company “arranged to have paramedics parked in ambulances outside” in the hot summer months for workers who fainted during their grueling work. Recent figures show the median income for an Amazon worker is $28,446 while at Facebook it is $240,430 and $197,274 at Google. But, according to Bezos, who is worth $131 billion, his space company Blue Origin, which plans to send humans into space as early as this year, is the “most important work” he is doing.
  3. Just four out of 128 Eurofighter jets operated by the German Air Force are ready to fly real combat missions due to dysfunctional self-defense systems and lack of air-to-air missiles, Spiegel magazine has revealed. Spiegel’s Wednesday report said the problem with a critical device installed in the tips of the jet’s canard delta wings makes most of German Eurofighters unfit for service. The device, known as Defensive Aids Sub-System (DASS), is designed to detect a missile attack and warn the pilot of the inbound threat. It also serves as chaff and flare dispenser and has an optional laser warning. About half a year ago, technicians discovered that the device is not properly cooled, causing significant damage to sensitive electronics, Spiegel said. DASS is said to be a crucial part that ensures the pilot’s survival, and it must be active during all flying missions. Therefore, a number of combat-ready jets dropped drastically. In the meantime replacing defective pods proved difficult due to a specific spare part, needed to fix the cooling system, is currently unavailable as the manufacturer has been sold to another company. This appears to be not the only problem gripping the German Air Force. Eurofighter-compatible air-to-air missiles are also in short supply, the report said. The military is said to be unable to quickly procure the required number of projectiles. Consequently, only four jets out of the entire Eurofighter fleet are ready to fly combat missions at any time. Notably, it leaves Germany unfit for meeting its NATO obligations, such as carrying out in-flight interceptions. A spokesman for the German military told Spiegel the combat-readiness statistics for the Eurofighter fleet “looks better than in 2017,” but said the exact number of available jets is classified. The Air Force reportedly lists all Eurofighters that are able to fly as available – even those without functioning DASS devices. While they can be used during military exercises or for training rookie pilots, these jets still can’t be considered ready for NATO missions. Germany has declared 82 Eurofighters for the alliance’s High Readiness Forces (HRF) and Forces of Lower Readiness. Contributors are given 90 to 180 days to deploy ready-to-use-jets in case of crisis. However, given that there are no requests for such deployments, the Bundeswehr “can claim they meet all current operational obligations,” Spiegel writes. “We can say with good conscience that most of our troops are ready for use because there are currently no missions,” a military source told the magazine. This is not the first time German media uncovers a seemingly dire state of the country’s military. Earlier in April, it emerged that of the 97 Panavia Tornado jets currently in service, only 10 meet NATO requirements because of several equipment flaws that make it vulnerable and no longer suitable for duty. In 2016, German contribution to the US-led coalition strikes in Syria came under question when Tornados’ cockpit instruments turned out to be too bright for pilots flying night missions in night-vision gear. The fleet was later grounded after monitors in cockpits started losing screws during flights.

  10. Shadow of the Tomb Raider will look and run well on Xbox One X, according to Eidos Montreal. Lara Croft’s latest adventure, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, will feature 4K resolution support on Xbox One X and run at 60fps, according to Eidos Montreal studio boss David Anfossi. Speaking with Wccftech, Anfossi said the game on Xbox One X features “a new rendering and lighting system,” but it is also being “optimized for all platforms.” Wccftech notes the studio head didn’t state whether the game displays in native 4K or if it runs locked at 60fps on Xbox. Anfossi also added he feels it will be “the most beautiful game ever” on Xbox One S at launch. You should head over to Wccftech through the link and give the video interview a watch. Shadow of the Tomb Raider was revealed last week, alongside news Nixxes Software will lead development of the PC version with help from Nvidia. This means PC players can expect all sorts of bells and whistles upon release, much like Rise of the Tomb Raider. Shadow of the Tomb Raider releases on September 14 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Various editions of the game are available for pre-order, and offer 48 hours early access play. The game will also feature a Season Pass.
  11. In Death Matters, you take on the role of a different settler every time you're killed. If death doesn't have enough meaning for you in Fallout 4, this mod will encourage you to respectfully mourn every time you're battered apart by a deathclaw. In OW3Nx25's Death Matters (get it on Nexus here), each time you die you have to retrieve every non-quest item from your corpse, wherever you left it. Upon respawning, you take on the role of a settler from your nearest settlement—or Sanctuary, if there aren't any suitable settlements nearby. Your journey to retrieve your items will then come up as a quest. The stakes are pretty high: your new character only has basic weapons and armour, and dying again will make your old body vanish for good. Keeping your settlements active is important, because for each respawn, the settler you're playing as is gone forever. You'll have the same appearance as your old self, though. Death Matters brings, dare I say it, a Dark Souls-like tension to your journey through the Commonwealth, and OW3Nx25 suggests activating the mod in tandem with the game's Survival mode. The only caveat is that it doesn't work with Fallout 4's DLC locations, so keep that in mind if you want to try it out. Check out our list of best Fallout 4 mods if you're looking for enhancements, new locations or anything else.
  12. Samsung has reportedly made a deal with Oath - a Verizon company* - to pre-install four applications on its Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ flagship phones. According to Reuters, the apps in question are Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Finance, Newsroom, and Go90 mobile (a video streaming app). Reportedly, these four apps will likely be pre-installed on all Galaxy S9 models across the US, regardless of carrier, and even on phones sold around the world. This deal will allow Oath (and Verizon) to easily deliver content, including videos, and ads to millions of Android smartphone users. Ad revenue will be split between Samsung and Verizon. In most cases, users don't really like the idea of buying phones with too many pre-installed apps, which are often seen as bloatware. We assume (and hope) Samsung will allow Galaxy S9 and S9+ owners to uninstall the aforementioned apps if they wish to. More details on this should be announced later this week - we'll update this article once new and relevant information is available. * - Verizon created Oath in 2017 by merging AOL with Yahoo (as you may remember, Verizon completed its acquisition of Yahoo last year).
  13. LG is finally ready to join the other big-brand players in the 2018 flagship party. The G7 is officially here complete with the company's odd insistence on the awkward "ThinQ" branding. Starting with the G7's face, perhaps its most prominent new feature is the notch. LG decided to buy into the current trend with its fresh new 6.1-inch 19.5:9 3120 x 1440 pixel display. It's an evolution on the Full Vision panel, now surrounded by even thinner bezels. While it relies on LCD technology, rather than OLED, LG's fresh new M+ panel uses an RGBW arrangement, with the extra pixel intended to improve contrast and help in delivering a promised maximum brightness of 1000 nits. It is HDR 10 compliant and covered by a Gorilla Glass 5 protective layer. As for the notch itself, LG insists it's a "new second screen". The company pioneered secondary screens with the V-series back in the day, but has switched its phablets to conventional OLED panels since. Besides the notch, the LG G7 also features a hardware assistant button - a first for the company. Instead of going down the proprietary road, the Korean giant decided to stick with Google Assistant, effectively making this the first Google Assistant hardware key to appear on a smartphone. Speaking of hardware, the LG G7 remains true to the double-glass design approach (Gorilla Glass 5 on both sides), with an aluminum frame (notably thinner around the edges than on the LG G6) sandwiched in between. The entire body is IP68 certified and MIL-STD-810G compliant. The glass back enables wireless charging with the G7 touting both WPC and PMA support. You can also top the sealed-in 3,000 mAh battery, through the Type-C port, at up to Quick Charge 3.0 rates. Qnovo battery tech is on board, to prolong the battery endurance over the years. Other notable specs on the LG G7 include a Snapdragon 845 chipset, paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The latter is expandable via microSD. A flagship chipset also means the a standard connectivity set, including LTE-A, 3-Band carrier aggregation, Cat.16/13 (1Gbps/150Mbps) Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, GPS, Bluetooth 5.0 and Dual-SIM support in some markets. In the camera department, the G7 sticks to the tried and true LG formula, with a pair of 16MP snappers - one with a 71-degree field of view, the other, with a super wide 107-degree one. The primary module sits behind an f/1.6 lens and is complete with OIS, phase detection and laser autofocus. The wide lens uses a dimmer f/1.9 lens, has no OIS and is fixed focus. The camera experience is boosted by LG's AI camera tech, as well as a smart pixel-binning technology for low-light shots. The secondary camera can assist with depth information for more convincing portraits as well. An 8MP, f/1.9, 90-degree camera handles selfies. LG approached the G7 ThinQ design with its typical emphasis on audio. It rocks a Boom Box stereo speaker setup, complete with DTS-X. The latter can simulate 7.1 surround sound and it's the first time we are seeing it on a smartphone. As for wired output, not only is the all-important 3.5mm jack intact, it is also connected to a high-end 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC from ESS. For capturing audio, LG has thrown in a pair of microphones, which promise an impressive pickup range of up to 5 meters. The Google Assistant should benefit from the extra range as well. The LG G7 ThinQ will ship with Oreo , complete with LG's AI Pack 2.0. The company has already committed to releasing the Android P update once Google delivers the final version of its next release. Color options include: New Platinum Gray, New Aurora Black, New Moroccan Blue and Raspberry Red. Pricing and availability will be revealed at a later point.
  14. Many have tried to figure out exactly what is going behind Blake Lively’s glossy smile and flaxen good looks, and Anna Kendrick is just the latest to try. In A Simple Favor, directed by Paul Feig, Kendrick plays a woman whose friend (Blake Lively) goes missing. It seems like Lively’s a spy, given her ridiculously expensive home and fondness for fancy liquor, but maybe she just makes a lot of money from a secret lifestyle website, and it’s a secret she wants to
preserve? Anyway, A Simple Favor premieres September 14.
  15. Upfront news includes 'Good Doctor' licensing pact, 'Handmaid's Tale' renewal, plans to start running live TV ads in Q2 Hulu is trying to flex its muscles and prove it’s bulking up to be a top contender in the streaming TV ring. The company has now surpassed 20 million U.S. subscribers, Hulu announced at its 2018 upfront event Tuesday in New York. The number, an 18% increase since the end of 2017, includes both Hulu’s live-TV package and standalone on-demand service. In a coup in its battle with Netflix, Hulu announced a multiyear deal with DreamWorks Animation, giving it exclusive U.S. streaming rights for the studio’s library titles, new releases starting in 2019, and new original series to bow in 2020. The pact — Hulu’s largest deal for kids and family programming to date — means DWA is ending its five-year relationship with Netflix, which had committed to spending $1.5 billion with the studio under their initial 2013 deal. Also on the content front, Hulu clinched an exclusive streaming deal for “The Good Doctor,” ABC’s breakout new primetime drama of the 2017-18 season. To no one’s surprise, Hulu renewed “The Handmaid’s Tale” for a third season, bringing back the buzzy, award-winning dystopian drama series. Hulu also announced series orders for “Four Weddings and a Funeral” from Mindy Kaling and “Ramy,” a Muslim-American comedy from Ramy Youssef and Jerrod Carmichael. Unlike Netflix, Hulu has a story to sell to advertisers. Hulu said it will begin selling dynamically inserted ads in the Hulu With Live TV service starting later in the second quarter of 2018, coming a year after it launched the $40-per-month bundle. And it announced it will offer the industry’s first ad-supported downloadable content, slated to launch with the 2018-19 TV season. True, Hulu’s 20 million subscribers are still less than half the domestic base of Netflix, which tallied 56.7 million U.S. streaming subs at the end of Q1. But Hulu believes its combo of live TV and streaming VOD gives it a unique position in the market. “Hulu is the complete TV experience for consumers, offering both live and on-demand programming and more consumer choice than ever before,” CEO Randy Freer said at the event. Hulu’s upfront, part of the 2018 Digital Content NewFronts series, was held at the recently redubbed Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden after the streamer bought the naming rights in March. Over the past year, time spent watching Hulu has grown by more than 60%. That’s been boosted by the “virtual” pay-TV service, which offers 50-plus channels including ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC in most markets. In addition, Hulu said that 78% of viewing on the service takes place on internet-connected TVs. Hulu’s DreamWorks Animation deal stands to be another carrot to lure new customers. Under the agreement, Hulu will become the exclusive U.S. streaming home to future theatrical releases from the studio beginning in 2019, including upcoming franchise films “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” “The Boss Baby 2” and “Trolls 2,” in the pay-one window (which historically has gone to premium cable networks). It will also expand Hulu’s film lineup in the coming years with a catalog of library films from the studio including “Shrek,” “Shrek 2” and “Shark Tale.” Furthermore, Hulu will be the home to a slate of new, original series based on characters from DreamWorks Animation’s franchises and upcoming feature films. DreamWorks Animation Television will develop and produce the series, expected to hit Hulu beginning in 2020. “The Good Doctor” comes to Hulu under a deal with Sony Pictures Television, joining Hulu’s lineup of exclusive licensed content. The agreement covers the full first season of the series, which is now streaming on Hulu. Future episodes will become available the day after broadcast on ABC. Last year, Hulu acquired exclusive SVOD rights to NBC’s “This Is Us,” the No. 1 new broadcast drama of the 2016-17 season. ABC recently renewed “The Good Doctor” for a second season, after it became the network’s most-watched freshman series in 13 years. The show stars Freddie Highmore (“Bates Motel”) as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome who joins the staff of a prestigious hospital. Hulu also touted its slate of upcoming originals. Those include “Castle Rock,” Hulu’s second project from J.J. Abrams and Stephen King set to premiere on July 25; “Catch-22,” from George Clooney and starring Kyle Chandler; “The First,” from Beau Willimon and starring Sean Penn; and “Little Fires Everywhere,” from Reese Witherspoon and Kerri Washington. On Wednesday, it announced “Into the Dark” as the name of the previously announced horror anthology series from Blumhouse Television, with feature-length episodes to debut monthly starting in October. In the advertising-specific portion of Hulu’s pitch, the company said it will introduce the dynamic ad-insertion capabilities for Hulu With Live TV across select cable networks in Q2 before rolling out to additional channels over the coming months. Since launching the live TV package in May 2017, Hulu has steadily added local stations to now offer almost 600 across the U.S. But other than adding HBO and Cinemx as premium options, the Hulu With Live TV national lineup hasn’t made major changes. Hulu carries networks from its parent companies — Comcast/NBCUniversal, Disney, 21st Century Fox and Time Warner (Turner) — as well as CBS, A+E Networks, and Scripps. Also at the upfront, Hulu announced that it has selected Nielsen’s Digital Ad Ratings (DAR) over-the-top video measurement service as its “currency of business” across the platform. Hulu’s advertisers can use DAR to measure, guarantee and report campaign audience delivery across all desktop, mobile and connected devices. Meanwhile, Hulu’s forthcoming ad-supported download feature will let subscribers watch TV shows and movies on mobile devices — without needing an internet connection. For advertisers, it will represent a brand-new environment for targeting “engaged viewers who love the experience of watching television, wherever they may be,” said Peter Naylor, Hulu’s SVP of ad sales. Finally, the company announced four new ad-metrics partnerships. Hulu will now offer attribution across the auto category with IHS Markit’s Polk Campaign Measurement Solutions and in the retail category with Nielsen Buyer Insights. Hulu also will deliver an expanded offering for consumer packaged goods brands with IRI’s attribution solution. Under a deal with Experian, Hulu’s advertisers will be able to cross-reference their customer data with Hulu’s first-party data to better track sales growth on the platform.
  16. “Roseanne” was once again the top show of Tuesday night by a wide margin in the key demo, but fell to CBS’ “NCIS” in total viewers. Airing at 8 p.m., “Roseanne” averaged a 2.5 rating in adults 18-49 and 10.3 million viewers. “NCIS” pulled in a 1.2 in the demo and 12.1 million viewers, marking the first time “Roseanne” has been beaten in either measure since its premiere in late March. Furthermore, “Roseanne” was down by approximately 26% in the demo and 23% in total viewers compared to its last original episode on April 17.
  17. The streamer also confirmed plans for its Blumhouse horror anthology 'Into the Dark' and has acquired SVOD rights to ABC's 'The Good Doctor.' Hulu is plotting another return to Gilead. At its annual upfront presentation to Madison Avenue ad buyers, the streaming service announced Wednesday that it has renewed Emmy-winning drama The Handmaid's Tale for a third season. While Hulu, like Netflix and Amazon, does not release viewership data, the streamer says last week's season two premiere doubled its audience compared with its freshman run. The decision to renew Elisabeth Moss-starrer Handmaid's Tale comes as no surprise. The series, which became the first at a streamer to win best drama at the Emmys, also took home a Golden Globe and prestigious Peabody Award. All told, the series based on Margaret Atwood's best-selling novel of the same name has won more than 30 awards to date. The pickup comes two days after Hulu and producers MGM Television signed creator and showrunner Bruce Miller to an overall deal after he, too, earned an Emmy for writing the show's pilot. Miller has been a longtime fan of Atwood's novel. When Hulu began developing the project with MGM TV, executives originally wanted to hire a woman to write the straight-to-series drama. Miller's updated take on Atwood's 1985 book wowed executives. While it was developed during the Obama administration, The Handmaid's Tale became increasingly relevant after Donald Trump was elected president. Ilene Chaiken originally wrote the first draft when Handmaid's Tale was in development at Showtime — well before Miller was tapped to take on the material. Chaiken executive produces the Hulu series alongside Miller, Emmy-winning star Moss, MGM TV's Warren Littlefield, Daniel Wilson and Fran Sears; Atwood is a co-exec producer. Handmaid's Tale anchors Hulu's drama lineup that includes upcoming Castle Rock; Catch-22 with George Clooney and Kyle Chandler; Beau WIllimon's Sean Penn space drama The First; and Reese Witherspoon's and Kerry Washington's Little Fires Everywhere. Comedies Remy and anthology Four Weddings and a Funeral from Mindy Kaling also were picked up to series at Hulu's upfront presentation. In addition to the Handmaid's renewal, Hulu confirmed its straight-to-series order for Blumhouse Television horror anthology Into the Dark. The series will feature 12 stand-alone feature-length episodes with new installments debuting the first Friday of every month throughout the year, starting in October. Each episode is inspired by a holiday from the month of its release with Blumhouse's genre/thriller spin on its story. The company is working on deals with filmmakers, creators and actors for the series, which will bow Oct. 5 with "The Body." The first installment takes place on Halloween night in L.A. and explores the selfie culture. It's based on the short film of the same name and follows a hitman who carries out his work in style. The Body will be directed by Paul Davis with Tom Bateman (Murder on the Orient Express, Vanity Fair) set to star as hitman Wilkes. Rebecca Rittenhouse (The Mindy Project) co-stars alongside Aurora Perrineau (Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare), David Hull (Insecure), Ray Santiago (Ash vs. Evil Dead). Paul Fisher co-wrote the script. Alexa Faigen (Love Happens) exec produces for Blumhouse. Into the Dark's second installment, due Nov. 2, is called "Flesh & Blood" and will be directed by Patrick Lussier (My Bloody Valentine). Dermot Mulroney stars as a doting father trying to help his teenage daughter (newcomer Dana Silver), who suffers from agoraphobia and has not left the house since her mother's unsolved murder. Tembi Locke (Eureka) co-stars in the installment that is set on the eve of Thanksgiving a year after the mother’s death. On the licensing side, Hulu announced it has secured SVOD rights to ABC's breakout medical drama The Good Doctor, starring Freddie Highmore and from Sony Pictures Television Studios.
  18. Michael C. Hall's British accent is just one of several things that are interestingly off in Harlan Coben's new Netflix suburban suspense drama. Do you think Michael C. Hall knows that people can actually watch Netflix? It feels like the justifiably acclaimed Six Feet Under and Dexter star is treating the streaming giant like a black box indie theater where he can check off bucket list items like "Play JFK" or "Talk With a Funny British Accent" without anybody ever seeing. We see you, Michael C. Hall! At least Hall's distracting turn as Kennedy was only a small piece of a single overreaching episode in the otherwise consistent second season of The Crown. In Netflix's upcoming thriller Safe, Hall is a primary selling point, and it's impossible to listen to him say "privacy" or "uni" in a proper British accent without losing concentration for the next two or three lines of dialogue. Hall's accent, reasonably consistent and yet rarely believable, is one of many things on Safe that are askew and, the more I think about it, the more I can't tell if it's intentional if not particularly satisfying, or merely bad. The eight-episode series, created by American novelist Harlan Coben, fits into several tried-and-true TV genres, starting with the story of a quiet suburb in which behind every carefully manicured hedge or pristinely skimmed swimming pool lurks a festering secret. In this case, it's an enclosed community and, in the opening credits, the show's title is written in the severe metal gate that offers residents the illusion of security. Hall plays Tom, a pediatric surgeon still grieving the death of his wife and struggling to relate to his two daughters, particularly rebellious teen Jenny (Amy James-Kelly). When Jenny goes out to a raging party and never returns, Tom is forced to turn amateur gumshoe in a mystery in which everybody, including his best friend Pete (Marc Warren) and his various seemingly upstanding neighbors could be a suspect. Helping in the investigation are Tom's new girlfriend Sophie (Amanda Abbington), a local detective, and the unprepared force's newest investigator Emma (Hannah Arterton), a transfer from the big city. Again, the conceit here is that Tom lives in an enclave built for the express purpose of safety, with cameras distributed throughout for both protection and to negate secrets, and yet everybody he comes in contact with is hiding a secret. Some of the secrets are small, like the couple avoiding telling their kids that they're getting divorce after the school year. There's also a burgeoning sex scandal at the local school, and then there's a dead body. Coben is the series' credited creator, but the two episodes sent to critics were written by Danny Brocklehurst (Shameless) and directed by Daniel Nettheim (Dance Academy), and they all presumably recognize they're not blazing fresh ground. It's a genre that can be freshened by the extremes of the secrets, by a perceptive sociological critique of some sort, by an exaggerated satirical bent. Safe has none of those things. It's not overwhelmingly shocking, perceptive or funny. What keeps it watchable is the sense of unease or maybe inconsistency. Hall's performance is slightly off. His British accent feels like it could almost be a sleight of hand, the distraction from the intensity of his concern and questions about what Tom was doing when it wife died. Might Tom turn out to be a Russian spy or a masquerading undercover American? Probably not. But I'm curious. The depiction of teens is slightly off. The show feels like somebody watched a "kids out of control" news report 10 years ago and did nothing to update their behavior. The party Jenny goes to is almost out of a John Hughes movie, and the young characters' use of social media and texting is hopelessly antiquated. Are these stumbles or clues? I'm curious. The entire tone is slightly off. Accent aside, Tom's concern is straight-forwardly serious. The threat of a teacher-student affair is treated with Lifetime-style melodrama. The aforementioned body has to be disposed of, and that subplot veers nearly into farce. Tom's investigation leads him from one character to another introduced in practical block-caps as POTENTIAL SUSPECT in a way that could almost be a mystery-genre parody, like the taut alleyway foot pursuit climaxes in the chaser and chasee sitting at a restaurant guzzling water in exhaustion. I'm perplexed, but curious. I'm not as curious about the missing girl at the center of the story, which may be a problem. I do think these "off" elements point to creators who are aware of the comfort viewers feel with these familiar genre tropes and are tweaking them a little in the way you can do when you have actors like Warren, Abbington and Arterton doing fine work. It could take watching the six additional episodes to know if there's a cliche-upending payoff or if Safe is just a muddle. Cast: Michael C. Hall, Amanda Abbington, Hannah Arterton, Marc Warren, Audrey Fleurot, Nigel Lindsay Creator: Harlan Coben Premieres: May 10 (Netflix)
  19. A team effort from their seamers led Royal Challengers Bangalore to a 14-run victory over struggling defending champions Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. Tim Southee (2-25) and Mohammed Siraj (2-28) bowled brilliantly in the final overs and Umesh Yadav (2-29) picked up two early wickets to restrict Mumbai to 7-153. New Zealand's Colin de Grandhomme (23 not out) earlier propelled Bangalore's total to 7-167 when he smashed countryman Mitchell McClenaghan for three sixes off the last four balls of the innings, which cost Mumbai in the end. "We all believe in the changing room that this was the push we needed," Bangalore captain Virat Kohli said after leading his side to only third win in eight games this year. "Important two points. Just told the bowlers to back their gut. Take ownership of your field, your plans, and own it." Bangalore were missing aggressive batsman AB de Villiers for the second successive match after the South African failed to recover from a fever. Manan Vohra top scored with 45 off 31 balls and smashed four sixes and two fours, but big-hitting Kiwi Brendon McCullum (37) and Kohli (32) couldn't capitalise on good starts. McCullum was run out off a direct throw from Hardik Pandya from mid-off in the 15th over before Hardik returned and got three wickets in the 18th over. Mandeep Singh, Kohli and Washington Sundar all holed out in the deep off Hardik's medium pace while going for big shots before Grandhomme's little cameo lifted Bangalore's total in the last over. Mumbai's top-order struggles continued when Southee clean bowled Ishan Kishan with the first ball. Umesh then had Suryakumar Yadav lbw before captain Rohit Sharma was smartly caught behind by Quinton de Kock off the next delivery as Mumbai slipped to 3-21 in the fourth over. Legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal (0-23) then got appreciable turn off the wicket and didn't allow Mumbai batsmen to score freely. The Pandya brothers - Hardik (50) and Krunal (23) - shared a 56-run stand off 39 balls, but Southee and Siraj bowled well in the last overs to keep Bangalore's hopes play-off hopes alive. "Didn't play smart cricket and losing wickets in the powerplay doesn't help," Mumbai captain Rohit said. "We keep making those silly mistakes, which really shouldn't happen ... I think we can still qualify for the play-offs. We can't lose hope." Mumbai have just two wins from eight matches and are at the bottom of the table with Glenn Maxwell and Dan Christian's Delhi Daredevils.
