  1. Premium international TV drama is having its own golden age, and now factual TV giant Discovery wants a piece of it. The U.S. company is partnering with Britain’s Channel 4 to launch high-end foreign-language drama service Walter Presents in Italy in September, Variety has learned. The rollout is the first in mainland Europe for Walter Presents, which bowed in the U.K. in 2016. It’s a hybrid service, with some of its series being broadcast in linear fashion on Channel 4 and a library available on-demand online. Walter Presents is also available in the U.S. as an over-the-top service and in Australia through pay-TV service Foxtel. For the broadcast partners, which are worried about losing audience share to streamers, the arrangement with Walter Presents means having a foot in both the traditional and digital camps, and keeping viewers in the same ecosystem. Discovery is Italy’s third-largest broadcaster, boasting a family of channels; it plans to run some Walter Presents series on its Nove and Giallo linear networks, and offer a catalog of shows on its stand-alone Dplay streaming service, using the Walter Presents brand. “The ability to strip it from the linear channel Nove to Dplay was what really excited us,
its success in working across platforms and following the audience from one to the other,” says Marinella Soldi, chief strategy officer for Discovery EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) and managing director of Discovery Networks Southern Europe. The move also gives Discovery a foothold in the world of high-end non-English scripted content. Its own modest foray into scripted originals in the U.S. has so far had lackluster results, with no breakout hit. Former Fox International Channels execs Jason Thorp and Jo McGrath launched Walter Presents in 2016 through their Global Series Network, together with a third co-founder, Walter Iuzzolino, a former Channel 4 commissioner and exec at U.K. production company Betty, now owned by Discovery. The service was conceived as a subtitled-drama boutique, offering “the finest writing, acting and directing in one place — almost an HBO-AMC-Showtime of international production,” Iuzzolino says. “Global audiences are used to the best that America has to offer. Whether it’s ‘Homeland,’ ‘Breaking Bad’ or ‘Billions,’ they know and love premium drama. The idea was to find that in every corner of the world outside the U.S. and U.K.” As well as being the name and face of Walter Presents, Iuzzolino buys content at markets and curates the lineup. “It’s man versus algorithm,” he says of the acquisition strategy. “Our curation is human. It is not defined by numbers or second-guessing what viewers want. It’s about giving them something they never knew they would fall in love with.” The Italian service will include programming from around Europe and farther afield but not from Italy, in keeping with Walter Presents’ ethos of offering viewers international high-end dramas in a language other than their own. However, Italy is traditionally a dubbing market, so a subtitled service will require viewers to change their habits. Britain provides an encouraging example: There was a notion that Brits would eschew subtitled fare, but shows like Germany’s “Deutschland 83” and Spain’s “Locked Up” have won a loyal following. “I think there will be resistance at first, but it will follow the same trajectory,” Iuzzolino says. “I think it will bring real change and innovation to Italy. And hopefully the other dubbing markets, the Frances and Germanys, will follow suit.” Alex Mahon, Channel 4 Chief Executive says “Walter Presents is a fantastic example of how broadcasters can creatively and commercially innovate.” She adds: “What better way to further build on its global success than enabling Walter to showcase the best of the world’s drama in his native Italy.” Discovery’s global reach means it could expand the Walter Presents model to its other markets if it succeeds in Italy, Soldi says. “Our colleagues in the Nordics have a similar or more dominant position, and in Spain we’re the fourth-largest player, so absolutely, there is the opportunity to roll this out further where we have Dplay and broadcast assets,” she notes. “We hope this will be the start.”
  2. Making her directorial debut, actress Rachel Griffiths has set Teresa Palmer and Sam Neill as the stars of her “Ride Like A Girl.” The film is now in production in Melbourne and Victoria, Australia, and is set for a release in the third quarter of next year. The sports drama tells the life story of Michelle Payne, the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup. Palmer (“Hacksaw Ridge”) stars as Payne and Neill (“Jurassic Park,” “The Piano”) as the father who raised Michelle and her nine brothers and siblings as a single father. Also in the cast are Sullivan Stapleton, Genevieve Morris and, Brooke Satchwell, Sophia Forrest, Anneliese Apps, Katie Castles, Veronica Thomas, Zara Zoe, Aaron Glenane and Henry Nixon, as the Palmer siblings. The young Michelle Payne is played by Summer North and a young Stevie Payne by Gryffin Morrison. The U.K.’s Embankment films is handling international sales and will represent the picture next week at the Cannes Film Market. Transmission Films is set as the distributor in Australia and New Zealand. “Ride Like a Girl” is produced by Richard Keddie, and written by Andrew Knight and Elise McCredie. Screen Australia is the principal investor, in association with Film Victoria, and the Victoria State Government. “We are celebrating both Michelle’s resilience and athletic brilliance, as well as her sisters’ inspiring achievements in the sport before her. We also explore the profound impact of those men who gave her opportunities and stood by her at critical moments and hope to inspire more men to become champions of change,” said Griffiths in a prepared statement. Griffiths appeared as a performer in “Muriel’s Wedding,” “Saving Mr Banks,” and “Hacksaw Ridge.” The film is the first backed by Screen Australia’s Gender Matters: Brilliant Stories initiative to go into production.
  3. Hayu, featuring 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians,' its spinoffs and 'The Real Housewives' earlier launched in Europe and Australia. NBCUniversal International on Wednesday unveiled plans to launch Hayu, a subscription VOD service focused on reality TV shows, in Canada by the end of the year. The streaming service — featuring series like Keeping Up with the Kardashians and spin-offs, along with The Real Housewives and Million Dollar Listing — earlier launched in the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and Scandinavia on digital devices like mobile phones, tablets, laptops and connected TVs. The Hollywood studio will be hoping Hayu fares better than another NBCUniversal digital platform, the comedy-focused Seeso streaming service, which shut its doors last year. "Given that reality content is hugely popular in Canada, we are pleased to be readying Hayu — an SVOD product with a proven track record — specifically curating the service for Canadian fans of the genre," Hendrik McDermott, senior vp of branded on-demand at NBCUniversal, said in a statement. Hayu will face stiff streaming competition in Canada. Netflix and Amazon Prime are already dominant video platforms here, and CBS recently launched its CBS All Access streamer north of the border, its first expansion into an international market. Local broadcaster Bell Media has separate long-term licensing deals with U.S. cable channels Showtime, HBO and Starz to compete against market-leader Netflix Canada with its own streaming service, CraveTV. Canadians are already fans of a number of the NBCU shows on Hayu, as many of the series, including the Top Chef franchises, I Am Cait, Made in Chelsea, Shahs of Sunset and The Millionaire Matchmaker are likely to have already aired here on local broadcast and cable platforms. There's no word on pricing for the local Hayu streamer. New episodes will be added to the Canadian service mostly on the same day as a series premieres in the U.S., with over 5000 episodes from around 150 shows added to the service each year. And all seasons or box sets of the reality series means fans of unscripted content can catch up on their favorite series on the Hayu app from the beginning.
  4. No good deed, or viewer, goes unpunished in Dean Devlin’s ridiculous serial killer thriller. How, indeed, do you follow up Geostorm? If you’re Dean Devlin, you take one of the lesser-known cast members of that disastrous 2017 disaster movie (from which Devlin was removed during reshoots), abscond to Portland, Oregon — “my home away from home” per his press notes director’s statement — with a dreckish screenplay by Brandon Boyce (Apt Pupil), and make a low-budget serial killer thriller so ludicrous and imbecilic that it’s almost charming. Almost. Irish actor Robert Sheehan plays Sean Falco, a restaurant valet to most people’s eyes and a petty thief in actuality. Whenever a clearly well-to-do customer drives up, he and his professional partner, Derek Sandoval (Carlito Olivero), put on their small-time-crooks caps. One of them stands guard as their target eats dinner while the other hops in the patron’s vehicle, locates their home address through GPS, and robs the abode of easy-to-carry valuables. It’s a living! But when douchenozzle extraordinaire Cale Erendreich (David Tennant) revs-up in a flashy Maserati, Sean and Derek see a potentially more lucrative gig. Perhaps one to retire on. Small hitch: As Sean is searching Cale’s house, he discovers a woman, Katie (Kerry Condon), bound, gagged and bloodied. Suddenly, this bush-league criminal’s moral code kicks in; of course an abducted person's life is worth more than stolen gold knick-knacks. Yet getting her free proves to be tougher than it seems, especially after Cale discovers that Sean is onto his cutthroat activities, of which this is not an isolated case. Obstacles are legion, be it the high-tech surveillance in Cale’s building that’s controlled by remote app, or the fact that Sean’s lawless pursuits severely lessen his credibility with local authorities. But the biggest obstruction might be Cale himself with his bug-eyed stare of death, his uncanny ability to be seemingly everywhere at once, and his infantile psycho-tantrums, which are rooted (as a hilarious, twice-repeated flashback reveals) in a childhood trauma involving an untamed horse. Tennant is awful, by which I mean wonderful, by which I mean truly terrible, yet in a legitimately magnificent way
I think. This is a you-can’t-kill-THAT-performance! par excellence, beginning at peak nutball and staying breathlessly atop the trash heap. There’s a scene in which Cale sneaks into Sean’s apartment while he’s showering and aims a gun at his unaware prey. Tennant is all skulky glower — he could be Hannibal Lecter’s distant cousin — until he suddenly defuses the tension by emphatically not shooting his weapon. “Poom!” he says, mock-firing a bullet while dismissively arcing his arm like a snooty girl in ballet class. He can’t take any of this seriously and he’s having a ball of a time doing it. There are worse things than watching a former Doctor Who slumming it with such relish. (At his shoutiest, Tennant seems like he’s been possessed by that long-running sci-fi series’ maniacal big bad, Davros.) The rest of the cast can barely keep up with his insanity, though that doesn’t prevent Sheehan from turning on the little-hipster-lost charm, or Condon from valiantly attempting to lend shades to her woman in perpetual peril. Sadly, none of the performers’ efforts put over the cliched machinations in Boyce’s screenplay, the stupidest of which might be nicknamed “Chekhov’s bolt cutter.” Should you find yourself in front of Bad Samaritan (and that could only ever be by force or out of sheer masochism), just sit back and revel in the verdant Portland scenery or marvel at the ill-fitting orchestral score by Joseph Loduca, who apparently thinks he’s composing for a Devlin super-production past like Stargate or Independence Day — both lost Da Vincis in comparison to this dross.Get to the end and you might even find yourself pining for Godzilla ’98. Perish that thought. The company also runs its own digital platform Voot, which competes with other players such as Netflix, Amazon and Hotstar from 21st Century Fox’s Star India unit, among others. Tipping Point's launch comes on the heels of Viacom recently unveiling its digital content unit in the U.S., Viacom Digital Studios, which will focus on developing original digital programming and branded content across Viacom's portfolio of brands. The initiative is part of an effort to help BET, Nickelodeon, MTV and Comedy Central reach mobile-first viewers. As a film studio Viacom18 Motion Pictures has some major hits to its credit, such as its recent controversial epic Padmaavat, which was a major box-office hit collecting more than an estimated $46 million (3 billion rupees). Viacom18 Motion Pictures CEO Ajit Andhare said that through Tipping Point the company “will evolve from being a film studio into a holistic content studio, reaching beyond theatrical offerings into millions of screens on mobile and personal devices with its unique storytelling.” Meanwhile, Viacom18’s next release is biopic Manto, based on the late acclaimed writer Saadat Hasan Manto and directed by actress Nandita Das, which will premiere at the Cannes film festival in the Un Certain Regard sidebar.

  7. Battlefield 1 expansion They Shall Not Pass is free for the next two weeks on PC and Xbox One. PC and Xbox One users can play They Shall Not Pass, the first Battlefield 1 expansion, for no charge. Those who play on PC need only to log into their Origin account, add it to the cart, and it’s theirs to keep. It’s the same with Xbox One users: just log into the corresponding Xbox account, add it, and it’s tied to the account forever. This is for all Battlefield 1 owners, not just EA Access and EA Origin members. As of press time, the offer doesn’t seem to be available for PS4 users just yet. We’ll keep checking for you. They Shall Not Pass contains four maps, additional weapons, and the French Army, along with an additional game mode. Rupture was made available free to all Battlefield 1 players two weeks ago, and DICE promised more maps from They Shall Not Pass would be released in May. Today is the first of May, so, grab the DLC while it’s free. DICE is winding down support for the game, but in June, Shock Operations will be introduced. The new mode supports 40 players and sees attackers and defenders battling over sectors on a single map. Shock Operations will be available on five maps: Giant’s Shadow, Lupkow Pass, Prise de Tahure, River Somme, and Zeebrugge. The maps will be accessible to those without the corresponding DLC or Premium Pass when playing Shock Operations. Monthly updates for Battlefield 1 will continue until June.

The new patch for Microsoft’s console is planned to go live today at 1am PDT/ 10am CEST/5pm KST. We’ve included the official release notes for patch #13 below: Xbox One PUBG Patch 13 content: These optimization and performance improvements have been proven to be effective on the PUBG test server, so we’re bringing them over to live servers now. The free-fall and parachuting process has been optimized, leading to performance improvements during the initial stages of each game. World loading has been optimized. “Play-doh” and interior prop pop-in effects have been improved. Movement data for nearby but out-of-sight players is now handled in a more efficient manner, resulting in general performance improvements. Similarly, when nearby but out-of-sight players equip or unequip items, this process is handled in a more efficient manner. This helps with performance and crashes throughout the game. The inventory has been optimized, improving response time when opening it and solving some crashing issues. Uninhabited boats and vehicles were causing some performance issues, and we’ve resolved this issue. KNOWN ISSUE: After long play sessions (three or more hours) on the standard Xbox One and the Xbox One S, the game sometimes crashes. This has been a problem for some time, and we hope to solve it soon. In the meantime, there’s a simple workaround you can use. Simply restart the app every couple of hours if you plan on playing a longer play session. In addition, Bluehole writes that more details about testing on the Xbox Test Server will be announced soon.

  10. It hasn’t even been out a week and Avengers: Infinity War can’t stop breaking box office records. The latest MCU offering, which has already surpassed DC’s Justice League in worldwide box office success, has now broken another box office record, proving anyone who thought uniting the biggest stars in the MCU might be a gamble was wrong. Avengers: Infinity War, which saw an ensemble cast of the best of the Marvel Cinematic Universe unite against one its most exciting villains ever, smashed box office records during its opening weekend. The movie is already a huge financial triumph despite worries that it may fall short of box office expectations even with massive marketing efforts to ensure its success. It set a new all-time domestic and worldwide opening weekend record at the box office, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. According to Deadline, Infinity War has also broken the record for best Monday for a movie at the box office during the month of April, taking in an estimated $25.2 million yesterday. The record was previously held by Furious 7, which earned an impressive $14 million on April 6, 2015. Despite its extraordinary box office power, the all time Monday record is still held by another MCU offering. Black Panther crushed the competition when it brought in a whopping $40.1 million on the Monday of President’s Day weekend in February. Deadline also points out that Infinity War is currently ranked 9th overall for Monday box office records, thanks in part to not opening on a long weekend. Perhaps Infinity War will break more Monday records on Memorial Day weekend, but then it will have both Solo: A Star Wars Story and Deadpool 2 to contend with. Still, Infinity War looks like it will have the staying power to continue to dominate at the box office well into May, and it will be interesting to see just how much the movie will earn in total. As of this morning, the movie has already grossed $282.9 million domestically, quickly approaching the 5 day/$300 million record set by The Force Awakens. The stars of the movie continue to post their reactions on social media and do promotional appearances, which is only helping keep the momentum of this latest MCU offering going. It also doesn’t hurt that Infinity War isn’t currently facing any real competition at the box office and it appeals to a wide range of moviegoers. With Black Panther having broken so many box office records it will be exciting to see just how successful Infinity War becomes, especially since it’s Marvel Studios 10th Anniversary. They’ve definitely proved they know how to throw a celebration, the only question now will be if they can continue the momentum.
  11. Thank you for making this giveaway. A lot of users will benefit from this.
  12. Not that there was much doubt who was behind it, but two days after "enemy" warplanes attacked a Syrian military base near Hama on Sunday, killing at least 11 Iranians and dozens of others, and nobody had yet "claimed responsibility" the attack, US officials told NBC that it was indeed Israeli F-15 fighter jets that struck the base, NBC News reported. Ominously, the officials said Israel appears to be preparing for open warfare with Iran and is seeking U.S. help and support. "On the list of the potentials for most likely live hostility around the world, the battle between Israel and Iran in Syria is at the top of the list right now," said one senior U.S. official. The US officials told NBC that Israeli F-15s hit Hama after Iran delivered weapons to a base that houses Iran's 47th Brigade, including surface-to-air missiles. In addition to killing two dozen troops, including officers, the strike wounded three dozen others. The report adds that the U.S. officials believe the shipments were intended for Iranian ground forces that would attack Israel. Meanwhile, as we reported yesterday, the Syrian army said early on Monday that "enemy" rockets struck military bases belonging to Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime. According to several outlets, the strikes targeted the 47th Brigade base in the southern Hama district, a military facility in northwestern Hama and a facility north of the Aleppo International Airport. Meanwhile, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said on Tuesday that Israel on Tuesday morning had four problems, one more than the day before: "Iran, Iran, Iran and hypocrisy." The comment came one day after Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu "revealed" a cache of documents the Mossad stole from Iran detailing the country's nuclear program, which however critics said were i) old and ii) not indicative of Iran's current plans. "This is the same Iran that cracks down on freedom of expression and on minorities. The same Iran that tried to develop nuclear weapons and entered the [nuclear] deal for economic benefits,” Lieberman said. “The same Iran is trying to hide its weapons while everyone ignores it. The state of Israel cannot ignore Iran's threats, Iran, whose senior officials promise to wipe out Israel,” he said. “They are trying to harm us, and we’ll have a response. Iran's Defense Minister Amir Khatami threatened Israel on Tuesday, saying it should stop its "dangerous behavior" and vowing that the "Iranian response will be surprising and you will regret it." Khatami's remarks came Following Netanyahu's speech which Khatami described as Israeli "provocative actions," and two days after the strikes in Syria. * * * Meanwhile, in a potential hint at the upcoming conflict, Haaretz writes that two and a half weeks after the bombing in which seven members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards were killed at the T4 base in Syria, Israel is bracing for an Iranian retaliation for the Syrian strikes (and if one isn't forthcoming, well that's what false flags are for). As Haaretz writes, the Iranians’ response, despite their frequent threats of revenge, is being postponed, screwing up Iran's war planning. It’s also possible that as time passes, Tehran is becoming more aware of the possible complex consequences of any action. Still, the working assumption of Israeli defense officials remains that such a response is highly probable. The Iranians appear to have many options. Revenge could come on the Syrian border, from the Lebanese border via Hezbollah, directly from Iran by the launch of long-range missiles, or against an Israeli target abroad. In past decades Iran and Hezbollah took part, separately and together, in two attacks in Argentina, a suicide attack in Bulgaria and attempts to strike at Israeli diplomats and tourists in countries including India, Thailand and Azerbaijan. In any case, Lebanon seems all but out of bounds until the country’s May 6 parliamentary elections, and amid Hezbollah’s fear of being portrayed as an Iranian puppet. The firing of missiles from Iran would exacerbate the claims about Tehran’s missile project a moment before a possible U.S. decision on May 12 to abandon the nuclear agreement. Also, a strike at a target far from the Middle East would require long preparation. * * * For now, an Israeli war with Iran in Syria is far from inevitable: the clash of intentions is clear: Iran is establishing itself militarily in Syria and Israel has declared that it will prevent that by force. The question, of course, is whether this unstable equilibrium will devolve into a lethal escalation, or if it will somehow be resolved through peaceful negotiation. Unfortunately, in the context of recent events, and the upcoming breakdown of the Iran nuclear deal, the former is looking like the most likely outcome.
  13. The Iran nuclear deal hangs by a thread as US President Donald Trump keeps everyone in suspense over whether he will recertify it on May 12, despite the scrambling by other Western signatories to defend it. Here’s what’s at stake. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), better known as the Iran nuclear deal, is an agreement signed on July 14, 2015, after 20 months and six rounds of rollercoaster negotiations. The signatories are Iran and a group of nations known as the P5+1: Russia, China, the US, UK, France (all permanent UN Security Council members), and Germany. The deal aims to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon by curbing its nuclear program, which dates back to the 1950s and was, ironically, set up with American help before the 1979 revolution ended most of Iran’s ties with the West. Iran’s concessions Under the JCPOA, Tehran gave up 98 percent of the enriched uranium it already had, and only keeps material enriched to the lowest threshold of five percent (weapons-grade uranium starts at 85 percent). Two-thirds of Iran’s enrichment centrifuges are halted, leaving only around 6,000 older models operational. Any remaining materials and facilities are to be used strictly for scientific, medical, and agricultural purposes. Iran’s compliance is being monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The JCPOA boosts the IAEA mission in Iran from 50 to 150 experts with round-the-clock access to any nuclear-related facilities, and additionally envisions remote and satellite surveillance. Sanctions relief In return, Iran gets relief from a portion of economic sanctions, some of which have been in place since the Islamic Revolution of 1979. United Nations and European Union sanctions were either suspended or lifted, and no new sanctions will be introduced as long as the JCPOA is in effect. The US, however, never agreed to permanently lift or even suspend its own sanctions against Iran. Instead, the US president periodically reviews the deal and signs a waiver that ceases their application. Even so, this only applies to secondary sanctions, those that penalize other countries for doing business with Tehran. Those that affect American companies, as well as those related to things other than Iran’s nuclear program (like human rights) remain in place. The US’ take on the deal The JCPOA was signed late in Barack Obama’s second term as US president, and was seen by his supporters as one of his crowning achievements. It did, however, make a crack in his relations with Israel. Donald Trump famously believes the Iran deal is “the worst deal ever.” He campaigned on the promise to take a tougher stance against Iran, which has been on America’s list of “state sponsors of terrorism” for nearly 35 years. Now that he is president, Trump appears to be on course to withdraw the US side of the bargain unless it gets “fixed.” If Trump doesn’t sign the next scheduled sanctions waiver on May 12, US participation in the deal will effectively end, which would likely send the whole agreement unraveling. The EU’s take on the deal So far, the IAEA has repeatedly certified Iran’s full compliance with the agreement, and the European Union has deferred to its judgment. When the first signs appeared that President Trump might want to kill the deal, European signatories rose to its defense, the consensus being that it remains the best mechanism to keep tabs on Iran’s nuclear program. With the countdown running to May 12, rhetoric from the UK, France, and Germany has shifted somewhat. They still believe the JCPOA needs to be protected, but they now want a new deal, which would also limit Iran’s ballistic missile development, somehow contain the spread of its influence in the Middle East, and provide further limits on its nuclear program past 2025, when the JCPOA term expires. What does Israel say? “Iran lied.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is a big fan of show-and-tell presentations and a long-time opponent of the JCPOA. Back when it was still in the making, he claimed it was too lenient and leaves room for nuclear weapons research. Well-timed for the looming May 12 deadline, he has rolled out “100,000 secret files,” supposedly obtained by Israeli spies, that “prove” Tehran has been developing nukes, whatever IAEA inspectors say. Israel’s take is not only important because Tel Aviv and Tehran are arch-enemies historically, constantly hurling belligerent rhetoric at each other. It also has weight with the US; Trump has said Netanyahu’s claims are among the things that showed him he had been “100 percent right” about the Iran deal. What does Iran say? As the JCPOA looks set to crumble, surprisingly few of the Western signatories have actually asked for Iran’s opinion. When French President Emmanuel Macron did phone Tehran last week, his counterpart, Hassan Rouhani said the JCPOA is non-negotiable and made it clear Iran won’t accept further restrictions beyond what’s already been agreed in 2015. Both Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif have indicated that Iran will withdraw from the deal if US sanctions are reinstated.
  14. Jessica Chastain is teaming up with an international cast of A-list talent on an all-female spy thriller titled 355. Chastain came up with the idea and pitched it to writer/director Simon Kinberg while they were shooting the upcoming X-Men film, X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Kinberg has since then agreed to direct the movie and will help Chastain pitch the film to buyers at this month’s Cannes Film Festival. Chastain has been actively championing gender equality in Hollywood for some time now, and not just with her film roles either. The Oscar-nominee successfully pushed for equal pay for her The Help costar Octavia Spencer on their upcoming road trip movie project and has collaborated with female directors on several occasions now (including, next month’s historical drama Woman Walks Ahead). While Kinberg will be calling the shots on 355, the movie is being written by Theresa Rebeck (Smash) and features a cast of women from around the world, Chastain included. Deadline is reporting that the 355 cast also includes Oscar-winners Lupita Nyong’o, PenĂ©lope Cruz, and Martion Cotillard, along with Bingbing Fan (X-Men: Days of Future Past) and Chastain. The plot will revolve around a group of female agents from organizations around the world who have to work together, in order to stop a clandestine criminal group from acquiring a weapon that could create chaos on a global scale. Kinberg further confirmed to Deadline that the hope is 355 will be successful enough to launch a franchise. Chastain says the title for 355 comes from a conversation that she had with the CIA consultant on Kathryn Bigelow’s true story based thriller, Zero Dark Thirty. As they explained to her, “Agent 355” was the code name for a famous female spy back in the American Revolutionary War (one whose true identity is still unknown) and has since become the general slang for female spies. Chastain told Deadline that the plan is for 355 to be relatively grounded in its portrayal of secret government operatives, similar to Bigelow’s film: “It’s a film and not a documentary, but our goal is to make this action spy thriller as authentic as we can, with as much trade craft as we can. So when people in these organizations, in the CIA or MI6 around the world see the film, my goal is they will say, ‘Wow, this is pretty authentic. They got it.’ That was the thing I loved the most in making Zero Dark Thirty.” The spy genre has typically be dominated by male action stars, but 355 is part of a wave of films aiming to bring some balance to the genre. Charlize Theron played an extremely deadly spy in last year’s hit Atomic Blonde and is hoping to reprise the role in a sequel. Elsewhere, director Ridley Scott is circling Fox’s Queen and Country – a film based on the comic books about a female British secret intelligence agent – and Marvel Studios is actively courting directors for its Black Widow movie. There’s also the Charlie’s Angels reboot that Nyong’o was rumored for last year; presumably, she’s no longer eyeing the project. Male-driven spy movies haven’t necessarily been lacking in good female characters in recent years, but their roles have typically been supporting in nature. 355 will change that by featuring a diverse collection of women front and center, on an adventure that has the makings of good pulpy fun, based on everything that has been revealed so far. While everyone waits to see if that proposed all-female MCU superhero movie ever gets off the ground, 355 could offer a similar breath of fresh air in the meantime. 16. Whatever happened to the Skripals? UK media and authorities fall silent on Salisbury poisoning Sergei Skripal, the poisoned ex-Russian spy, and his daughter Yulia dominated headlines a few weeks ago. Now they’ve vanished from the public eye, leaving many to wonder what exactly happened. Yulia apparently recovered enough to leave the hospital and is now thought to be in a safe house, and there have been no updates on Sergei’s condition since his daughter walked out of Salisbury District Hospital in early April. Since then, Syrian bomb attacks have dominated British headlines, followed by the Windrush scandal that ended with the shock resignation of Home Secretary Amber Rudd. Some argue the British media just had its attention diverted, but others suggest something else is at play. A number of bloggers have spent months questioning the government’s narrative on the Skripal attack. Among them is former UK Ambassador to Uzbekistan Craig Murray. Murray pointed out a tweet by Channel 4 journalist Alex Thomsen, who said the only “decisive public move by the authorities has been to censor MSM (mainstream media) via a D Notice
from identifying Mr Skripal’s handler living nearby.” For those who may not know, a D-notice is a British government request that particular information is reported by the media on grounds of national security. The media does not have to agree, but almost always does. Now, police and intelligence agencies have revealed that they have still to identify a suspect in the nerve agent attack in Salisbury. It’s one thing for someone who supposedly poisoned an old man and his adult daughter with a chemical weapon in the middle of Britain’s sleepy countryside, but another for them to then disappear into thin air in a country with more CCTV coverage than any other. And how can Britain point the finger so firmly in Russia’s direction if they have exactly zero suspects? So many questions, so few answers. Apparently frustrated with the lack of closure, many have taken to social media to raise their digital eyebrows about the lack of Skripal updates
and lack of suspects. None of that seems to matter though, as UK National Security Adviser Sir Mark Sedwill knocked down any hope that the police were closer to catching the bad guys who attacked the Skripals. Asked by an MP at a Commons defence committee hearing if they knew who the individuals responsible were, his response was simple: “Not yet.” Even though Sedwill lacks any suspects, he still insists that Russia is the UK’s biggest threat. So will Sergei Skripal recover? Where’s Yulia? Who did it? Mysteriously, the updates on the Skripal saga have dried up.
  17. Netflix will debut a re-cut edition of Arrested Development season 4 that at last puts the fragmented story in chronological order. When canceled cult sitcom Arrested Development finally got a fourth season on Netflix, hopes were high that Mitchell Hurwitz and company would recapture the magic that made the show so beloved (though not by enough people to actually keep it on the air). Though the Bluth family was still up to their same old antics, and Hurwitz still had a wizard-like command of the show’s veritable galaxy of running gags, Arrested Development season 4 wound up disappointing a lot of fans. The biggest complaint was that the season was too fragmented and non-linear and that nothing really paid off. Another big issue for fans was the notable lack of interaction between characters, as most episodes focused on only one or two members of the cast. Arrested Development creator Hurwitz long-ago heard the complaints of fans about season 4 and promised a re-cut version that would put the episodes in chronological order. Now, as revealed on the Arrested Development Twitter, that re-cut is ready to see the light of day on Netflix. Hurwitz’s season 4 do-over goes by the title Arrested Development Season 4 Remix: Fateful Consequences. The re-worked season debuts on Netflix on Friday, May 4. After the re-cut, the original 15-episode season now runs 22 episodes. According to Hurwitz, he did this not only to fix the flaws of season 4, but to stretch it out into more episodes the better to reach the minimum number needed for syndication. Hurwitz says the new cut remedies one of the main problems with season 4 by putting more characters together in the same episodes. However, if the characters are still performing in their own stories and not actually interacting, it’s fair to ask how much of an improvement it really is. As for the debut of season 5, Hurwitz will only say it’s coming soon. However, Arrested Development actor Henry Winkler recently said in an interview that season 5 will debut in midsummer. The new season reportedly revolves around a murder mystery involving the disappearance of Lucille Austero from season 4. Now fans can watch the re-worked season 4, with the story at least laid out in chronological order, in preparation for the big season 5 resolution of the Lucille 2 mystery. And yes, we’ve already been promised that season 5 will not be a big mess of solo episodes, but will feature the Bluth clan actually appearing together in scenes just like the old days.
  18. Yesterday, we speculated that the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge would receive their Oreo update mid-May. However, it looks like some users in the UK began receiving the update on their device today, as spotted by sammobile. And no, the update isn’t a faux Oreo update like the one Verizon rolled out not too long ago, this is the real deal. Not too long ago, Samsung had accidentally rolled out an Oreo developer build to one device in Vietnam, and that was the first time we got to see Oreo on the Galaxy S7. Samsung is now rolling out firmware version G930FXXU2ERD5 and G935FXXU2ERD5 for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge respectively in the United Kingdom and weighs in at around 1.2GB. For now, only carrier-locked variants have received the update, and it’ll be a while before their carrier-locked counterparts receive it. The official factory image isn’t up on Samsung’s site yet but should be up soon, opening up the possibility of sideloading it. The firmware is only available over-the-air right now and can’t be downloaded through Samsung SmartSwitch. The devices will receive all of the new features that come with Android 8.0 Oreo such as PiP, autofill, and notification channels, the new firmware includes Samsung Experience 9.0 which brings new edge lighting modes and further customization options, along with a host of other smaller changes. The global rollout of the update is imminent, but you might have to wait a bit for it. Keep an eye out for an OTA update or you can also try manually pulling the update by going to the Software update menu in the Settings app. You’ve got to cherish this update for as long as you can, as it may be the last major software update that the flagship will receive.
  19. As promised by the company, the Honor 7X Oreo update has started rolling out in the United States. Arriving as EMUI 8.0, the update brings along several enhancements (in addition to the usual Oreo goodies, of course). The list includes the face unlock feature, a new floating navigation dock, updated Setting menu and Phone Manager, phone gallery recycle bin, as well as ability to connect with two Bluetooth devices at same time. Project Treble support is included as well. Given that the roll out has just begun, it may take time for the update to reach all units in the country, so you need to be patient.
