  1. James Woods has been dropped by his talent agent Ken Kaplan, who the actor referred to as a "political liberal." Though Kaplan did not reveal any specifics as to his decision, he referred to "feeling patriotic" as a contributing factor. Starting his career in the early 1970s, James Woods is an American actor born in Vernal, Utah who made a name for himself starring in movies like David Cronenberg's body-horror thriller Videodrome and Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America opposite Robert De Niro. He's also lent his voice to several animated projects over the years, including Disney's Hercules as the god of the underworld Hades, Fox's animated series Family Guy as himself, and most recently as Lex Luther in the Justice League Action animated series. In his personal life, Woods has positioned himself politically as a conservative, actively announcing his views via his personal Twitter account; and he recently announced that his talent agent Ken Kaplan has decided to drop him as a client. Woods revealed a screenshot on his personal Twitter account of an email that Kaplan sent him on July 4, 2018 revealing that his agent no longer wanted to represent him. Though light on details regarding why exactly he chose to go his separate ways, Kaplan wrote that his motivation stemmed from it being the Fourth of July, that he was "feeling patriotic," and that he "could go on a rant," but assumed Woods already knew what he would say. Woods referred to Kaplan as a "political liberal," then posted his response to Kaplan on Twitter, saying, "Dear Ken, I don’t actually. I was thinking if you’re feeling patriotic, you would appreciate free speech and one’s right to think as an individual. Be that as it may, I want to thank you for all your hard work and devotion on my behalf. Be well.” Woods has faced recent personal backlash stemming from the #MeToo movement, with several actresses accusing the actor of sexual misconduct. During the "Take Back the Workplace" march in 2017, actress Elizabeth Perkins marched with a sign inscribed with James Woods' name, followed by the hashtag #MeToo. Actress Amber Tamblyn also responded to one of Woods' tweets revealing that the actor had once attempted to take advantage of her and her friend when she was sixteen years old. She then wrote an open letter to Woods that was published by Teen Vogue about her experience. While there's no telling why Kaplan specifically parted ways with Woods, the actor's personal lifestyle may well have played a role. That said, considering the brevity of the conversation that Woods made public, any assumptions about Kaplan's reasons for departure would be purely speculative. 2. Ant-Man and The Wasp director Peyton Reed dreams of making a crossover film teaming the titular duo with Marvel Comics' the Fantastic Four. Twenty years ago, Reed was involved in the early efforts to produce a Fantastic Four movie. Though the project passed into other hands, the desire to bring Marvel's first family to the big screen never left Reed's mind and now he wants to help bring the team into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. First appearing at the dawn of what became known as the Silver Age of Comics, The Fantastic Four was a revolutionary comic book in several respects. While teams of super-powered people were nothing new, the Fantastic Four marked the first time such a team was formed from a family dynamic. It was also one of the first comics to depict superpowers as being as much of a curse as they could be a blessing, as in the case of Ben Grimm, whose monstrous form as The Thing made him a figure of fear and ridicule. The series was also unique in that the Fantastic Four were a team of adventurers, whose stories usually centered around exploring other dimensions and fighting rival scientists rather than thwarting bank robbers and costumed criminals. Reed spoke about his love of the Fantastic Four as part of a interview with Forbes. When asked about the possibility of making a Fantastic Four movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Reed was agreeable and noted that a tie to Ant-Man and The Wasp might be the easiest way to accomplish that, given their thematic synchronicity as science-based superheroes. "I stand by the fact that the Fantastic Four, the comics, are the crown jewels kind of thing and that I think there is still an amazing, unbelievably great Fantastic Four movie to be made. Also, I think thematically the Ant-Man movies deal with a lot of the same things that Fantastic Four does." Reed was quick to point out, however, that there have not been any formal discussions along those lines and that decisions about a Fantastic Four movie (much less a crossover with Ant-Man and The Wasp) in the wake of the merger of Fox and Disney are out of his hands. Reed did agree, as a fan of the comics, it's exciting to see the various properties coming together under one banner in the movies, comparing it to how Stan Lee brought together various preexisting characters to form The Avengers. "It was exciting when they brokered the deal to have Spider-man come from Sony and be in Civil War and now be in the MCU. Whether it's X-Men characters or Fantastic Four or whoever, I have to believe that Kevin Feige has at least some general idea in his mind about how that could work. I have no idea and I'm not privy to all that but it's exciting as a family." While it may be some time before we see the Fantastic Four in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios could do far worse than to put Reed on the job. Ignoring Reed's clear passion for the project and knowledge of the characters, his work on the first Ant-Man film proved his capacity for handling the balance of comedy and action that a true-to-form Fantastic Four film would require. Hopefully audiences can expect more of the same when Ant-Man and The Wasp releases later this week. 3. Incredibles 2 is poised to surpass Avengers: Age of Ultron on the all-time domestic box office charts this weekend. Pixar's superhero sequel is one of the biggest hits of 2018 so far, as it broke records for animated films in its opening. In fact, its debut weekend haul of $182.6 was higher than many recent live-action comic book movies, including Wonder Woman and Spider-Man: Homecoming. After waiting 14 years for the Parr family to return to the big screen, audiences came out in full force to see their next adventure. While Incredibles 2's time in the #1 position on the weekend charts was short-lived due to the release of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, it has done very well in the early stages of its theatrical run. As of this writing, Pixar's blockbuster has earned $448.2 million in the U.S., already ranking as the third highest-grossing movie of 2018. Even with the multiplex getting a little more crowded this weekend with Ant-Man and the Wasp, Incredibles 2 is about to pass a major financial milestone. According to Box Office Pro, Incredibles 2 is estimated to earn $27.3 million in its fourth weekend. This would take its domestic total up to $500 million, meaning it would sail past Age of Ultron ($459 million) and become the fifth highest-grossing superhero movie of all-time. With Incredibles 2 still going strong, odds are its climb up the ladder won't stop there. Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight is fourth on the superhero list with $534.8 million, which is a figure Incredibles 2 should be able to beat as well. It'll be interesting to see if it can work its way into the top three, which is populated by a collection of MCU films that have grossed in excess of $600 million domestically. Currently, Incredibles 2 is the only high-profile animated movie on the market, but that'll change next weekend when Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation opens in theaters. While that franchise isn't exactly a box office juggernaut, it should still take away some business from Pixar, meaning Incredibles 2 might have to "settle" for fourth place. That would still make it the biggest animated movie ever made, topping Finding Dory's $486.2 million. Incredibles 2 director Brad Bird was coming off a commercial and critical disappointment in Tomorrowland, so this was a nice rebound for him. There would clearly be interest in a third installment, but Bird is looking ahead to doing something original next. He's already shot down the possibilities of making sequels to Ratatouille or The Iron Giant, so odds are Incredibles 3 isn't on the forefront of his mind, either. After all, it took him 14 years to release a sequel everyone was clamoring for.
  4. It may be early, but Spider-Man: Far From Home is shaping up to be bigger and funnier than Spider-Man: Homecoming. The tendency when it comes to movie sequels is to do what made the first film work and do more of it. 'Bigger is better' is the mantra they often follow and that continues to be a tough bar to surpass for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When it comes to Sony and Marvel working together especially, how Homecoming turned out could make that even more difficult. But, with an overseas adventure coming and Jake Gyllenhaal in talks for Mysterio, there's plenty of ways they'll shake the franchise up. Far From Home will do what no other Spider-Man movie has done and take Spider-Man out of the United States - finally paying off a tease from Amazing Spider-Man 2. The globe-trotting story will offer more locations and possibly characters. They'll look to maintain the John Hughes tone from Homecoming, but that doesn't mean they aren't looking to improve in both areas. THR spoke to Ant-Man and The Wasp editor Dan Lebental about his latest MCU work, but also asked him about his future projects. One of them will be Far From Home, where he'll return to his role as editor after Homecoming. He was asked if there was anything he could tease about the sequel and he said they're going bigger and that it will be funnier. I can't say much about the new Spider Man, but I will offer up that it will be both grander in scale and even funnier than the last one. The rest of the story will have to wait. The grander scale, as Lebental puts it, should be easier to accomplish with the story they are looking to tell. While most of Far From Home's story remains a secret, Feige has said it will be a summer vacation-style film. If Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is traveling across Europe for the summer - after being brought back to life in Avengers 4 - then there's no limit to how big they can go. There's already been indications that Far From Home will film in multiple European countries too. Marvel makes some of the biggest blockbusters around, so they shouldn't have too much trouble topping the rather street-level, New York adventure Spidey embarked on last time. Making the film even funnier could be the more difficult task to pull off. Peter is naturally very comedic and witty and Holland has perfectly shown that ability so far. Holland wasn't the only comedic performer in Homecoming either. Jacob Batalon's Ned was particularly rich with comedy, as were the teachers played by Martin Starr and Hannibal Buress. If they can manage to make the follow-up funnier and bigger while maintaining the overall quality, then Spider-Man: Far From Home could be an incredibly pleasing sequel. 5. Netflix is estimated to spend between $12-13 billion in 2018, spending more than any film studio this year. The streaming giant has been curating new titles every month and has been doubling down making their own content. New films and returning shows are either in production or coming soon to the streaming service. With the recent spending estimate out, Netflix won't be slowing down any time soon. When Netflix was introduced in 1997, the company's business model was based in DVD sales and rentals via mail. Since then, Netflix has grown to become a juggernaut in the streaming service and film and television industries. Each month, the streaming service rolls out new titles they are adding to their list, while also developing projects in house. Subscribers have the opportunity to watch their favorite TV shows, or see the latest content the streaming service has to offer of their originals. Netflix has sustained itself for over 20 years and they won't be slowing down or rolling back on any new projects. According to a report from The Economist, Netflix will be spending a whopping $12-13 billion in 2018, more than any film studio or television company. Current chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, joined Netflix in 2000 when the company was just a DVD rental firm. In 2011, Sarandos made the bold move acquiring House of Cards for $100million. Many thought the move profligate, showing that Netflix was a source of money but didn't offer serious competition to studios and television companies that had taken decades to build. But Netflix flipped the script, helping to mold the streaming service branch of the film and television industry as we know it. With the huge spending this year, Netflix will offer subscribers 82 feature films. While Warner Brothers, the Hollywood studio with the biggest slate, will send theaters only 23. The company will also be producing or acquiring 700 new or exclusively licensed television shows, adding 100 scripted dramas and comedies, documentaries, comedy specials and children's programming, among others. Beyond the reaches of Hollywood, Netflix is currently making programs in 21 countries, such as Brazil, Germany, India and South Korea. Netflix is a behemoth in the streaming industry and part of this is due to the amount of content the streaming service acquires and produces in house. Countless projects are in the works with Netflix, and returning shows like critical successes Stranger Things, Marvel's Luke Cage, and GLOW, among others, are returning or likely to return. The business model is changing and growing all while adding new content for its many subscribers. The company has a strong base of subscribers that continues to grow when the company adds content audiences want to see or pick up shows that had previously been cancelled. With their spending this year, Netflix is sparing no expense to give their subscribers as much content as possible.
  6. Idris Elba is in final talks to play the villain in the upcoming Fast & Furious spinoff, aka. Hobbs and Shaw. The film sees Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprise their roles as (respectively) special agent Luke Hobbs and mercenary Deckard Shaw, as the mismatched duo team up on an adventure together. The idea for the spinoff was inspired by the onscreen chemistry between the pair during their scenes in last year's The Fate of the Furious (which nearly included a post-credits scene that set up the spinoff). The Fast & Furious spinoff already has a writer in Chris Morgan (who also wrote the previous six installments in the series), as well as a director in John Wick and Atomic Blonde helmsman David Leitch. As such, the film is now actively filling out its other lead and supporting roles, including - naturally - that of its central antagonist. According to Variety, Elba is all but officially set to play the baddie that Hobbs and Shaw will square off against during the Fast & Furious spinoff. (Johnson has already confirmed Elba's involvement on his Twitter account.) According to a previously-leaked casting call, Elba's character is known as Null and is described as being a "mysterious" international terrorist who prefers to dress entirely in black. The character description specifically refers to Null as a "British villain" around 49-59 years old, which makes Elba (who turns 46 this September and hales from England) all the more fitting a pick. This makes Fast & Furious yet another franchise that Elba can now add to his larger resume. The celebrated actor has played roles in everything from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the Star Trek movies and the Alien films (see Prometheus) in recent years. Over that same period of time, Elba has still found room to reprise his breakout role as tortured DCI John Luther on the BBC series Luther, lend his voice to multiple animated films, and costar in such awards season fare as Beasts of No Nation and Molly's Game. Of course, Elba is hot-in-demand for good reason, as he continues to rack up accolades for his diverse body of work. Between Elba signing on and Vanessa Kirby (The Crown) closing a deal to play the female lead this week, the Fast & Furious spinoff is sounding all the better in terms of its onscreen talent alone. Similarly, Leitch is coming off the critical success of Deadpool 2 and his involvement further assures that Hobbs and Shaw won't be lacking when it comes to impressive action sequences. The filmmaker says he's taking inspiration from classic 1980s and '90s buddy movies on the film - something that suggests the spinoff may yet manage to put a fresh spin on the Fast & Furious franchise (which is eight movies deep now). 7. The surviving MCU heroes and Captain Marvel come together in a stunning fan-created Avengers 4 poster. Marvel Studios may be capping their year early with Ant-Man & The Wasp hitting theaters this week, but that doesn't mean that there are not enough things to talk about regarding the franchise. And one of Marvel fans' favorite topics of discussion nowadays is the still-untitled Avengers movie, and understandably so, considering where Avengers: Infinity War left things for Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Directed by Marvel veteran directors Joe and Anthony Russo with the story also written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, Marvel Studios remains tightlipped about the film. That said, it's expected that its narrative will mostly revolve around Earth's Mightiest Heroes trying to undo the galactic chaos that Thanos deadly snap ensued. If anything, fans can expect that it would be a group effort to defeat the Mad Titan as Kevin Feige previously teased that Avengers 4 will feature the heroes are learning to be in a "true team" as they go on possibly their most dangerous mission yet. Created by Andrew V. M for Marvel Spoilers on Twitter is a stunning new fan-made poster for next year's Marvel ensemble film. The one-sheet features all heroes who survived Thanos' snap, plus Captain Marvel surrounding Thanos with a completed Infinity Gauntlet. The single images used in the illustration are sourced from different official Marvel official promo images through the years, although since no character look has been released for Carol Danvers yet, the artist opted to use a mock-up of what Brie Larson could look like as the superhero. Check it out below. View image on Twitter Twitter Ads info and privacy While the poster is not official, fans love looking at stunning fan-made creations like this just to imagine what Avengers 4's Marvel-released ensemble one-sheet would look like. Obviously, with a smaller pack of heroes coming to Phase 3 capper, it won't be as busy as Infinity War's massive promo art first released at last year's San Diego Comic-Con. Nevertheless, what makes Avengers 4 more exciting are the mix of heroes that would band together in the hopes of ultimately defeating Thanos. The original six Avengers will undoubtedly be at the story's front and center considering that it might just be the last mission for some, if not most, of them. And since Captain America and Black Widow, even Hulk and Hawkeye were sidelined in Avengers 3, people will be more than excited to see them play a bigger role in next year's movie. As announced a while back, Marvel Studios will be skipping Hall H at SDCC later this month. That means that details for Avengers 4 may more likely come towards the end of the year once they launch whatever marketing campaign they're cooking for the film. It will also only at that point that the much-discussed title of the forthcoming movie might be released, although a recent leak from the project's cinematographer may just be waiting to be confirmed. 8. Ant-Man and the Wasp is a game-changer for the MCU, being the first Marvel Studios movie to include a female character in its title. What's more is that its release is perfectly timed with two major social movements that no one could have possibly predicted. Set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, Ant-Man and the Wasp picks up with Scott Lang/Ant-Man (played by Paul Rudd) under house arrest. After siding against the UN's Sokovia Accords, he's legally bound to refrain from suiting up again and fighting crime. That said, he ends up being thrust back into action to help Hope van Dyne/Wasp (played by Evangeline Lilly) and her father Hank Pym (Played by Michael Douglas) thwart a new villain named Ghost (played by Hannah John-Kamen). In doing so, the three heroes end up digging up secrets from the past. Also starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Laurence Fishburne, and Michael Peña, and directed by Peyton Reed, Ant-Man and the Wasp managed to inadvertently align its release perfectly with two major social movements: #MeToo and Time's Up. In an interview with Collider, Lilly opened up about her enthusiasm towards Ant-Man and the Wasp, as well as its serendipitous release. When asked how she perceived the significance of playing the first female character in a Marvel Studios movie to have her name included in the title, Lilly is not only "honored and humbled, but also slightly terrified." Given the pressure associated with something so defining, her enthusiasm was evident. That said, Lilly specifically geared her focus toward the relevance that this watershed moment symbolizes, explaining that - given the #MeToo and Time's Up movements - "there's something about the sort of common consciousness where a piece of art or a moment is just rife and ready." Despite the fact that no one could have possibly predicted the timeliness of Ant-Man and the Wasp being released now, the movie managed to align with "this greater cultural shift that's going on." Lilly also likened Ant-Man and the Wasp's timeliness with the release of the series Lost, in which she also starred. She explained that had Lost been released just two years prior, it might not have been met with the same kind of success - though not necessarily for the same reasons. The future of the MCU is going all-in on its female characters, so audiences have plenty to look forward to once Phase 4 begins. Between Captain Marvel, a standalone Black Widow movie, and characters like Okoye, Scarlet Witch, and the Wasp - as well as Kevin Feige outright stating that the future of the MCU will include more female heroes than male - including a female character in a Marvel title is just the beginning. Soon, this moment will pale in comparison to the examples of gender balance present throughout the MCU in the near-future. KEY RELEASE DATES Ant-Man & The Wasp (2018) release date: Jul 06, 2018 The Avengers 4 / Untitled Avengers Movie (2019) release date: May 03, 2019 Captain Marvel (2019) release date: Mar 08, 2019 Untitled Spider-Man: Homecoming Sequel (2019) release date: Jul 05, 2019
  9. With the Venom film arriving later this year, a new fan poster shows another Spider-Man character that needs to make it over to the world of movies: Carnage. Carnage appears in all his glory on the poster, making fans wish for a spinoff movie featuring the iconic Symbiote in live action. In the comics, Carnage is like Venom, a member of an amorphous extraterrestrial race known as Symbiotes. Members of this species act like parasites and infect other beings. Carnage, though, tends to choose hosts that are serial killers and villains, which means he is often depicted as not only an archenemy of Spider-Man, but also of Venom. When comic book writer David Michelinie created Carnage, he intended to make a character much darker than Venom, a character that was more of a psychopath with no sense of morality. Syndicateprimes posted a fan-made poster for a Carnage movie on Instagram. That means this graphic is not real, but it's certainly the kind of movie that Marvel fans would love to see. The design of the poster makes it look almost legitimate, which makes sense since it's based on the official Venom poster, save for the fact that it is based on something that does not exist. Yet. Although rumors suggested Carnage would play a large role as the villain of the Venom movie, it seems Sony decided to go a different route. However, Sony did cast Woody Harrelson in a role many believe to be Cletus Kasady aka. Carnage, though word has it the role is a small one and Venom will face different villains during his origin story - namely, the Life Foundation. The potential introduction of Kasady, though, does mean there is some interest in the character, so perhaps if it goes over well, a Carnage movie is next, or at least a Venom vs. Carnage film. Meanwhile, Sony is gearing up for the Venom movie, which stars Tom Hardy as the Symbiote. The film already has the most viewed trailer in the Spider-Man franchise, and it seems it's exactly the kind of movie Marvel fans really want. It's about time fans get to see some classic Spider-Man villains on the big screen, and Sony seems to want to give that to moviegoers. With Carnage likely appearing in Venom, perhaps Sony is testing the waters to see if fans are interested in that character for a solo movie, which he well deserves - though it's more likely he's being set up as a villain for a potential sequel. For now, fans can enjoy this fan-created poster and hope Sony pays attention. KEY RELEASE DATES Venom (2018) release date: Oct 05, 2018 Silver and Black (2019) release date: Feb 08, 2019
