  5. AMC's Fear The Walking Dead has found itself the target of a lawsuit regarding its season 2 story arc. The network and their apocalyptic franchise are no strangers to lawsuits, with original The Walking Dead developer and former showrunner, Frank Darabont, filing and pursuing a $280 million profit participation action over the last five years. Though the flagship show has recently seen a rapid decline in the ratings, with the companion series never quite achieving the same lofty heights, there is no denying that the franchise remains a juggernaut, especially as far as AMC are concerned, recently renewing the zombie drama for season 9. Whether or not Fear The Walking Dead will receiving a fifth season remains the subject of much speculation, but fans remain hopeful - especially with the show going from strength to strength critically. Its score on Rotten Tomatoes just recently hit an all-time high of 86% for season 4 and its episode average remaining steady on 85%, far surpassing that of its parent show. Equally, fans were even more pleased as the show connected more overtly to the world of Rick Grimes and his band of survivors, with the fan-favorite character of Morgan (Lennie James) switching ships, thus bringing the timeline of both shows more or less in-sync with each other. Rather than season 4, however, the basis of the suit reaches all the way back to season 2, when Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) and her family were forced to leave Los Angeles as the military bombed the city in order to try and contain the zombie outbreak. Setting sail aboard The Abigail, the show took the format into uncharted territory as it took the action onto the high seas. It was an original spin on the increasingly familiar Walking Dead formula. According to the THR, however, it might not be as original as it seemed, with author Mel Smith alleging that the show stole the concept from his own zombie comic, Dead Ahead. The synopsis of which reads: "What had started as a fun little fishing trip soon turns into a nightmare of damnation, trapped on a floating prison. The continents have been hit by a zombie outbreak that spread fast, turning humanity into living corpses, leaving those at sea alive to fend for themselves. With provisions running low, hope comes on the horizon in the form of a luxury liner. All they needed to survive would be on the ship, but who among the fishermen will dare to board the liner and discover what’s become of its passengers and crew?" Though Fear The Walking Dead didn't feature hope in the form of a luxury liner, there are definite similarities. Similar ideas coming into fruition at the same time, even in similar formats, is not an uncommon occurence in the entertainment industry, though. The moment there is even a whisper of a show or movie being made, at least half a dozen almost identical concepts come out of the woodwork of various studios. Even before The Walking Dead brought the zombie apocalypse back into mainstream fashion, the core concept is one that has been explored on screens big and small for decades. That is why, lawyers will really have to dig into the specifics if any copyright infringement is going to be proven. One definitive connection that will no doubt be explored, though, is that of David Alpert. According to the complaint filed by Smith, Alpert was Smith's agent at the time of Dead Ahead's publication. What makes it especially interesting is the fact that Alpert also served as the business manager and business partner of Robert Kirkman, the creator of the comic book series that The Walking Dead is adapted from. Alpert is also an executive producer on Fear The Walking Dead and will not only be a co-defendant in the case but also face an added claim that he breached fiduciary duty. AMC themselves have deemed it too early to comment on the case. Whether or not the lawsuit will have an effect on the show's renewal chances remains to be determined. Fear The Walking Dead season 4 returns on Sunday, August 12 on AMC.
  6. Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, and Conan O'Brien might have all been rivals, but Donald Trump's insults at them had the three teaming up for the first time. Both The Late Show (CBS), and The Tonight Show (NBC) used the bit as their cold openings and allowed the three talk show hosts to answer back to Trump's insults in a way that brought their audiences together in laughter. At a campaign rally in West Columbia, S.C., Donald Trump, who was recently even lampooned in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, took shots at all the three late-night television hosts as well as others. "Did you see Jimmy Fallon? Jimmy Fallon! The guy screws up my hair, going back and forth. He was so disappointed to find out it was real. He couldn’t believe it," Trump told a booing audience right before calling Colbert a "lowlife" who has no talent. While Conan wasn't a direct target of Trump's, he joined in on a recent series of insults as well. In response, Colbert, Fallon, and O'Brien have teamed up to deliver their own insults to Trump. "It's surprising Trump is orange, because if you ask me, he is bananas," Colbert says in the collaborative clip (above). Then, he receives a FaceTime call from Fallon. After the two trade insults at each other based on Trump's quotes, Conan soon appears on the call while shaving. Conan can't believe the "real estate guy who sells steaks" is president. At the end of the video, Colbert and Fallon agree to meet at the infamous Red Hen restaurant that kicked out press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. All three talk show hosts don't seem to care about the inevitable backlash from Trump or his supporters online. They were soon called the "three stooges," "pathetic," and some even wished for their deaths. Then again, they didn't receive the wrath of Trump supporters like recent Television Critic's Association award nominee Samantha Bee, who has been horribly insulted online. Are Colbert, Fallon, Bee, and others participating in the open rebellion against Donald Trump crossing the line? According to some people, they are. But when has there really been a line, so to speak, in late-night political comedy? Still, the fact remains that there will be plenty of other anti-Trump monologues in the future from the late night talk show hosts as the U.S. president will still be in office for another two years.
  7. Epix is pushing forward their planned Alfred Pennyworth television series, with filming possibly beginning this fall. The series, titled Pennyworth, will serve as a prequel focusing entirely on the character of Alfred Pennyworth, giving an unprecedented look into the Batman character’s backstory and life before his career at Wayne Manor. Plans for the Pennyworth prequel series were revealed last month. Bruno Heller, executive producer and showrunner on Fox’s current Batman prequel series, Gotham, will be heading the Pennyworth series, which was given a straight-to-series order by Epix. Another one of Gotham’s executive producers and directors, Danny Cannon, will also work on Pennyworth. However, while the two series share a showrunner and director, Gotham and Epix’s Pennyworth prequel will not be connected in any way. Reportedly set in the 1960s, the series will follow the young Alfred as he lives his life in London following his experience with the S.A.S., Great Britain’s secret forces. The show will see Pennyworth go into business with Bruce Wayne’s father, Thomas Wayne, as the two begin a “secret company” together. The first season will be comprised of 10 episodes. Omega Underground reports that Epix is considering a fall production start on Pennyworth. Epix is also considering pushing production back to start in the winter. Filming is thought to begin in the United Kingdom, given the series’ London setting. Previous onscreen depictions of Pennyworth include Michael Caine’s now iconic performance as the Wayne’s butler in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy and Jeremy Irons’ recent take on the character with Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. While these iterations of Alfred Pennyworth have all been on the older side, this planned television prequel would afford a rare look into a younger Pennyworth and reveal exactly how he came into the service of the Waynes, a question that has not been answered in any true depth by previous works that included the character. This is not to forget the current television Pennyworth, played by Sean Pertwee on Gotham. The Alfred seen on Bruno Heller’s current show references the character’s past perhaps more than any other onscreen version of Alfred that has previously been portrayed, and Pertwee’s performance is regularly praised by fans and television critics. The character then appears to be in good hands with showrunner Bruno Heller. Though Batman fans can get their fix of the Wayne’s butler on the small screen with Gotham, it won’t be so for long. Gotham was renewed for its fifth and final season in May, and the last installment of the FOX series begins filming this July. Actress Camren Bicondova (Selina Kyle on Gotham) revealed earlier this month that season five will have a shorter episode length as well, with Gotham’s final season including ten episodes as opposed to the typical 22 episode length. As Gotham is winding down, perhaps Epix’s Alfred Pennyworth series will move in to take its place. Pennyworth does not yet have a series premiere date.
  8. The Simpsons almost predicted a match-up for the World Cup final... over 20 years ago. That's right, the long running animated series almost added another notch to the belt of predictions that have come true over the last 29 years. And there have been a lot. Predictions made on The Simpsons have been coming true for years, some more shocking and mind-blowing than others. Yet, no matter how big and small, each carries its own sense of mystery and wonderment - how do they do it? One such prediction was the recent (in-progress) acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney. Premiering in 1998, an episode titled "When You Wish Upon A Star" featured an image of the 20th Century Fox logo, underneath claiming to be a division of The Walt Disney Company. It was revealed to have come true in December 2017 when Disney announced a deal to purchase 21st Century Fox's movie and TV assets, months later solidifying it by winning approval and beating out Comcast for the deal in a brief bidding war. While this is the most recent, it is not the only one. Other predictions made by The Simpsons that have come to fruition include: President Trump, The United States Olympic Curling Team, auto-correct and the iPhone, smart watches and even mutated tomatoes. The list goes on and on. And now, they can add another prediction to their list. Digital Spy reports that The Simpsons were very close to adding to this series of predictions. In season 9, an episode titled "The Cartridge Family" predicted a soccer match-up between Portugal and Mexico (albeit as part of a "Continental Soccer Association" event, rather than FIFA's World Cup). Flash forward to present day, Portugal finished second to Spain, landing them in position to face-off against Mexico in a final showdown - that is, if Mexico had beaten Sweden within their group. Unfortunately, fans of the series and their uncanny ability of foresight will have to wait for the next prediction. Mexico lost to Sweden, putting them in place to only face-off against Portugal in the semi-finals, not the finals. While many attribute the accuracy of The Simpson's predictions to the number of years it has been on, as they would have gotten something right eventually, others see something potentially deeper. The writers of the show are some of the brightest and smartest writers out there, and these writers may be more attune of the direction our world is heading in, possibly compounding this by having first hand knowledge of potential products of the future. Still, another reason could be as simple as the power of suggestion. No matter the reason, and with this latest close-call, fans are sure to be keeping even closer tabs on episodes new and old, hoping to catch the predictions when they do come true. With no end in sight for the popular animated series, the possibilities are endless for The Simpsons.
  9. Jessica Jones star Krysten Ritter is adding a new skill to her repertoire as she'll be directing an episode of the show's upcoming third season. Now that The Defenders is out of the way and Netflix seems committed to three Marvel shows a year, the street-level heroes of the MCU are returning sooner and sooner. Two years seems to be the max between series, but the next batch of Jessica Jones episodes could come even sooner. Last month, Jessica Jones season 3 character breakdowns hinted the show would be back much earlier than expected while also hinting at a villain pulled from the comics. Since that initial news dropped, things have moved quickly. Jessica Jones season 3 began filming last week, meaning more information and set photos should be just around the corner. We also know a bit about some of the new additions, as some Jessica Jones audition tapes offered hints of the characters that will be joining season 3. And while we're still awaiting some official news about the show and when we might expect to see it, an interesting detail has emerged. Deadline is reporting that Krysten Ritter will be tackling directorial duties for an episode in season 3. While no additional details were revealed, it's another step up for the actor who recently released her debut novel Bonfire. As such, expect her to try her hand at writing for the show sometime in the future. Along with the news, Netflix released an image of Ritter in her Jessica wardrobe as she steps behind the camera. Netflix notoriously keeps release dates close to the vest, and that in conjunction with Marvel's standard secrecy means we don't know when Jessica Jones season 3 will drop. But given that it's currently filming, it seems almost guaranteed to arrive in 2019. If it does, it will join both season 2 of The Punisher and Iron Fist, which are also assumed to debut next year. Of course, Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb seemed to indicate Iron Fist season 2 could come this year. But with Daredevil season 3 expected to premiere in the fall, four Marvel-Netflix shows in one year seems unlikely. Future Marvel shows will be on Disney's streaming service, but the series in the Defenders-verse are currently going strong. Season 2 of Luke Cage was praised almost universally for topping its predecessor. It set up a bold new direction for season 3 and helped tease out some possible future team-ups. That said, fans are still hoping Luke and Jessica will fulfill their comic book destiny and end up together (and have their daughter). Perhaps season 3 of Jessica Jones will help tee this up, so stay tuned for more details as they emerge. Jessica Jones season 3 is expected to premiere in 2019 on Netflix.
  10. Game of Thrones actor Kristian Nairn, who played the doomed Hodor on the HBO fantasy series, says he didn't like that notorious Ed Sheeran cameo either. Over the years, Game of Thrones has had occasion to invite numerous musicians to appear on the show in cameos, almost always playing musicians. Many of these cameos have been completely unobtrusive and have passed by most fans unnoticed. The majority of viewers didn't bat an eyelash when Icelandic gloom-and-doomers Sigur Ros showed up as musicians to play "The Rains of Castamere" at Joffrey's wedding and got food thrown at them. Nor did they blink when another Icelandic group, Of Monsters and Men, provided musical accompaniment while Arya watched in dismay as a troupe of Braavosi actors satirically re-enacted her father's death. And most fans had no idea when members of the group Mastodon appeared as random Wildlings in the background of The Massacre at Hardhome. One musical cameo did however come under scrutiny from fans, and was received with mostly negative response. When pop star Ed Sheeran appeared as a traveling Lannister soldier in season 7's "Dragonstone," many complained that his cameo stuck out like a sore thumb and broke the show's spell. As it turns out, a very prominent Game of Thrones performer was also not happy about Sheeran showing up in Westeros. Speaking to Huffington Post, Hodor actor Kristian Nairn revealed that he hated Sheeran's appearance, and just isn't a fan of cameos in general. Nairn said: “I’m not a fan of the cameos in Game of Thrones. I don’t like them. I think it’s stupid. I don’t mind going on the record on that. I just think it takes you right out of the world. Especially Ed Sheeran. I was like, ‘Why is Ed Sheeran here?’ I mean, Ed Sheeran’s great. He’s a great guy, great musician, but why is he in Game of Thrones? I’m not saying I’m not a fan of Ed Sheeran. I’m being tactful here, but just not a fan of the cameo. I think most people would agree with me there. It was a big snap to reality. It’s like, ‘What? What?’ It’s a fantasy show. We’re all caught in this amazing world and spend so much time and money and talent to create, and all of a sudden there’s a pop star? What?” In the scene in question, Sheeran plays a member of the Lannister army sitting at a campfire in the woods entertaining his fellow soldiers by singing the ballad "Hands of Gold," whose lyrics refer to Tyrion Lannister's relationship with the prostitute Shae. Arya Stark happens to ride up on a horse, hears Sheeran's character singing and compliments him on the "pretty" song. Another soldier invites Arya to join them and, taken aback by the men's kindness, she dismounts and approaches the campfire. To the chagrin of many viewers, the scene does not end with Arya brutally murdering Sheeran and his fellow soldiers. In the estimation of Nairn and many other GoT fans, the Sheeran cameo was gratuitous and unnecessary, and even hurt the experience of enjoying the show. Amid the arguably over-cooked backlash over the cameo, episode director Jeremy Podeswa spoke out in defense of Sheeran's appearance, saying the singer was chosen because he was an appropriate actor for the scene in question. In fact, Sheeran reportedly scored the cameo mostly because Arya Stark actress Maisie Williams is a big fan and producers wanted to give her a nice surprise. The man who played Hodor has now gone on record saying he could have lived without Sheeran's cameo, even if it was a gift for Williams, and Game of Thrones fans have already made it clear that he is not alone in that assessment. Game of Thrones will return for season 8 in 2019 on HBO.
  11. Shadowhunters fans have gone to new lengths to prove their love and dedication for the show after taking out a billboard advertisement in New York City’s Times Square. The devotion of fans across the globe has been showcased time and time again since the news broke that the series would be cancelled due to a lack of further funding. Based on Cassandra Clare’s young adult book series The Mortal Instruments, Shadowhunters first premiered on the television network Freeform in January 2016. Loosely following the narrative of the books, the series explored the life of young Clary Fray after learning that she’s a Shadowhunter - a human with angelic blood who works to kill demons. Featuring Katherine McNamara as Clary Fray, the show was originally greenlit for development and production after Freeform agreed on an outlet deal with Netflix to provide the necessary funding. Despite the fact that the pilot episode attracted the highest audience numbers that Freeform had seen in the prior two years, it was recently confirmed that the series will not be continuing as Netflix has withdrawn from their funding agreement. As soon as fans heard of the show’s cancellation, there was evident outrage throughout audiences across a variety of different social media platforms. In a report released by Digital Spy, it’s apparent that fans of the series will not be going down without a fight as they’ve also now taken out a billboard advertisement in New York City’s Times Square. The advertisement will be showcased on 42nd Street and 7th Avenue, facing east. It’ll last for a full five minutes from 3pm on June 29, which is this coming Friday, though no previews of the advert have been released. In trying to save Shadowhunters and have it picked up by another network, fans have recently also raised about $20,000 for various charities, as well as bringing attention to the show through using the hashtag #SaveShadowhunters. Earlier this month, Freeform confirmed that the series would not be continuing on to see a fourth season, despite successful seasons 2 and 3 of Shadowhunters. It is currently set to conclude with a final 10 episodes to round off its third season, with the inclusion of a two-part finale. While Shadowhunters gained quite a range of mixed reviews and critics had plenty to say upon its release, the series has definitely gained a lot of audience attention. Being the second adaptation of the book series - after following a somewhat unsuccessful The Mortal Instruments movie - the skepticism around the series was understandable. However, the portrayal of lovable characters by new talent proved to attract fans all around the world. With impressive ratings and a lot of fan appeal, the decision for Netflix to withdraw further funding comes somewhat as a surprise to all. Compared to some of the other shows that Netflix has helped fund, fans aren’t happy with the explanation that’s been given to conclude the series with only its third season. Many cast members of the show, which was developed by Ed Decter, also expressed their upset at the sudden decision for the show to be cancelled. Fans of Shadowhunters are hoping that their immense commitment to bringing the show back to life will prove to be a success in the near future
