  1. Early numbers for Ant-Man and the Wasp's opening night have it topping Guardians of the Galaxy with ease. Marvel Studios' 20th film is officially out in theaters, at least domestically. While the World Cup has split up the overseas roll out, Ant-Man and the Wasp is now making its mark on the box office charts. It's already been a great year for Marvel Studios as both Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War topped $200 million in their opening weekend, but their latest isn't expected to come anywhere close. The first Ant-Man opened to $57M domestically and projections for the sequel predicted sizable growth. The most recent projections gave Ant-Man and the Wasp's opening weekend between $70M and $80M. While that's a big jump from the first, it'd still be the lowest amongst Phase 3 films, falling just behind Doctor Strange. However, Marvel's two smallest heroes have actually surpassed the sorcerer and beat the studios' space-traveling protectors. THR reports Ant-Man and the Wasp made $11.5 million last night during its Thursday night opening previews. This is nearly double of Ant-Man's $6.4M from 2015. When it comes to comparing it to other MCU films though, it easily took down Doctor Strange. The Benedict Cumberbatch solo movie launched to $9.4M in 2016. More impressive though, this just exceeds Guardians of the Galaxy's $11.2M launch from 2014. The Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly-led film looks poised to beat expectations based on these numbers. It will have no trouble surpassing the original film's gross in the opening weekend and could launch on par with Guardians if it has similar legs. The first installment of James Gunn's franchise earned $94.3M in its first weekend, which would be a great figure for Ant-Man and The Wasp to match. Opening night numbers typically reflect the number of hardcore fans who see the film right away, but Ant-Man and the Wasp will need general audiences to catch on to keep up with the aforementioned Marvel flicks. Both Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy launched in less crowded release windows, November and August respectively. Ant-Man and the Wasp still has to compete with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Incredibles 2 at the box office. The good reviews and word of mouth should give the sequel any extra help it may need, so we'll see if that results in a larger opening weekend than previously expected. Judging by these early numbers, Ant-Man and the Wasp has a chance to surprise. 2. Ant-Man & The Wasp director Peyton Reed opens up about that mid-credits scene shocker. Returning for the sequel after helming the first Ant-Man movie in 2015, Reed is also introducing the MCU's first co-headlining female superhero in Evangeline Lilly's The Wasp. Alongside Paul Rudd's Ant-Man and Michael Douglas' Hank Pym, the three plot a rescue mission to retrieve Michelle Pfeiffer's Janet van Dyne from the Quantum Realm, while also coming up against a brand new threat named Ghost, played by Hannah John-Kamen. Set two years after the events of Captain America: Civil War and concurrently happening with Avengers: Infinity War, it makes sense that Ant-Man & The Wasp has some strong narrative links to the latest Marvel ensemble film. However, the connection was most apparent during the film's mid-credits scene where the old and new versions of the superhero duo team-up to further explore the Quantum Realm. While Scott traveled to the microverse, Thanos' galactic genocide ensued - dusting off all three Pyms. In an interview with Den of Geek, Reed talked about how they came up with the idea of tying the end of Ant-Man & The Wasp to Infinity War. As it turns out, they always knew that they wanted to address the aftermath of Thanos' deadly snap, but they initially didn't know how. It was actually Avengers 3 writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely who came up with the idea. “What we didn't necessarily know was how we were going to deal with it. Do we glimpse TV monitors and TV reports of stuff going on in other parts of the world? That stuff seemed kind of lame and obvious. We've seen that in other movies. It didn't feel particularly inspired. I think that Markus and McFeely did the first crack at that scene, just conceptually. They set up these elements, and we refined it with our writers’ room…It felt like our movie's very particular way of dealing with that scene.” Of course, other than just having the same ending as Infinity War, Ant-Man & The Wasp's mid-credits scene is also more likely a set-up for Avengers 4. After the Pyms were snuffed out of existence, a clueless Scott was left in the Quantum Realm without anyone else operating the Quantum Tunnel. How he comes out of the alternated dimension he's currently in remains to be seen, but considering that he's tipped to play a significant part in Avengers 4, he's expected to emerge from it one way or another. It's still unknown just how much time has passed since the Mad Titan's click when next year's still-untitled offering picks up, but one thing's for sure: There won't be any new stories set in between the movies with Captain Marvel being a period piece set in the '90s. This way, there would be no more clues as to what might go down in Avengers 4. As for Ant-Man & The Wasp, the full introduction of the Quantum Realm and the Quantum Tunnel are expected to play a huge a part in the Avengers' attempt to restore order in the galaxy and defeat Thanos. 3. The Captain Marvel movie might get a special appearance by Carol Danvers' most faithful companion and cat, Chewie. It looks like the alien feline might turn up in at least a cameo when the movie releases in 2019. In Marvel Comics, Carol Danvers acquired Chewie when she was still Ms. Marvel. After defeating an evil space wizard, she adopted the feline, which is a member of an alien race called Flerken. She took the cat back to Earth with her and named it Chewie, after Star Wars' Chewbacca. The cat appeared in many issues of the Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel comics, often in background scenes or just cuddling up to Carol like any ordinary Earth cat. At one point, after Carol becomes Captain Marvel, Rocket Raccoon tries to kill Chewie before it can lay eggs. Rocket failed, though, and Chewie ended up with 117 offspring. After Carol tried to leave Chewie and its babies at an intergalactic rescue center, though, Chewie later teleported itself back to Carol. Samuel L. Jackson posted a photo to Instagram of him holding up a hoodie made especially for the cast and crew of Captain Marvel. That hoodie features the S.H.I.E.L.D. and Captain Marvel logos intertwined, as well as an orange cat. This could hint at Chewie's appearance in the movie. It is thought that Chewie's species, the Flerken, have a variety of powers beyond teleportation. In the comics, some believe that the felines can access pocket dimensions located inside their bodies where they can store things such as eggs, fangs and tentacles. They are also more intelligent than Earth cats and can understand conversation. Fans won't know about Chewie's appearance in the film for sure until Captain Marvel lands in theaters in 2019 - or unless a piece of marketing confirms it prior to release. The wait for the film is the longest since Captain America: Civil War. The movie is a long time coming, though, particularly for Marvel fans ready to see a solo female superhero leading a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. This is the first time that Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel will get a live-action treatment, so Marvel wants to make sure that it gets her depiction right. Although Captain Marvel already features a great line-up of supporting cast with Carol, including Nick Fury and Agent Coulson, having Chewie show up is a nice nod to the comics, and one that fans would probably really appreciate. Chewie's back story might change, but a teleporting cat would add a fun dimension to the movie. 4. In addition to changing a big chunk of the third act, recent reshoots for Shane Black’s The Predator have reportedly added more ties to previous movies in the series. Marketing for The Predator has only started to keep in, and while the first trailer was met with a muted response, subsequent previews have given fans a better idea of how the movie will play out. The story involves a group of disturbed war veterans who have to face off against the titular hunters in a small town. The government soon gets involved, and its revealed the creatures have been upgrading themselves with new abilities from every planet they hunt on. In addition to the reshoots changing much of the original third act, The Predator will undergo a 3D post-conversion too. Test audiences were said to be confused by the tone of the original cut, which was a balance of action, horror and humor. Director Shane Black (The Nice Guys) is known for mixing comedy and action, but the reshoots are said to have made the movie feel a little more serious. The Predator will also reveal that the government has known about the Predators for decades and have even captured one to understand its technology. This operation is known as Project: Stargazer and new reports from AVP Galaxy states the reshoots also added more ties to past entries. Olivia Munn’s scientist character will see some grainy photos from the first two movies, in addition to the spear of Predator 2’s hunter and Lex’s Alien tail spear from Alien Vs Predator. When the film started shooting there was some confusion about its connections to previous movies, with some actors stating it didn’t really have any. It’s since been confirmed the other movies are canon within The Predator, and it appears the reshoots added more footage to strengthen those links. It also seemingly makes Alien Vs Predator officially part of the series, after its canonical status was put in doubt by the events seen in Ridley Scott’s Alien prequels. The Predator has had a tough time selling itself, but the most recent trailer – which highlighted the action and the new abilities of the creatures – seems to have soothed some fears. Project: Stargazer itself will also be the subject of a prequel novel to tie in with the release of the movie, which will fill in the backstory about the origins of the operation, and the capture of the first Predator. 5. A brand new promotional ad for Mission: Impossible - Fallout reveals what Tom Cruise's stunt double does on set. Ethan Hunt is back in action - with Christopher McQuarrie calling the shots again for the sixth installment of the popular spy/action franchise. And with the movie's theatrical debut nearing, marketing is already in full swing. Cruise is long known to perform his own action stunts in his films, but he's very particular in regularly upping the ante when it comes to the Mission: Impossible franchise. Among some of his death-defying scenes from the spy thriller movies include hanging outside of a skyscraper in Dubai for Ghost Protocol and holding on to the side of a real, taxying cargo plane for Rogue Nation. So with a brand new film installment on the horizon, naturally, everyone is looking forward to what daredevil act he may be up to this time. Despite being game in doing these intense action sequence, he still needs to have a stunt double on-set in case some things get too extreme for him. Now, fans can see what a day in the work life of regular Tom Cruise stunt-double looks like. Thanks to a promotional video for Fallout, people can get a sneak peek as to what Cooper Adrian, Cruise's stunt double, really does on-set. As Cooper explains his roles and responsibilities, it became clear that the clip is obviously a joke with Paramount partnering up with Uber to promote the red carpet live stream of the film on July 12th on the latter's official YouTube channel. How exactly a car service company like Uber relates to Mission: Impossible is still unclear, nevertheless, the fact that it brought fans this hilarious piece of marketing is an acceptable reason for the collaboration. Watch the full clip above. This isn't actually the first time the Mission: Impossible franchise pulled this stunt. Almost two decades ago for Mission: Impossible 2, Cruise filmed a skit with his supposed stunt double, Tom Crooze, played by Ben Stiller. The bit was for the for the MTV Movie Awards and was much longer and in-depth than this latest one considering that it even featured the movie's director John Woo, but it would've really been great if they were able to bring Stiller in this new ad. While the film's true plot remains unknown as trailers and promo spots for the movie opted to focus on the intense fight sequences with minimal character interaction, at least fans are assured that Mission: Impossible - Fallout is by no means slacking on the stunt department. Cruise's Hunt has been seen in several death-defying sequences including hanging (and falling?) from a glass ceiling, as well as an airborne helicopter, rock climbing without any safety gear, jumping in between buildings (which badly broke his ankle and resulted in a temporary production shutdown) and partaking in an intense motorcycle chase on the streets of Paris. If anything, those are enough reasons to go see the movie when it hit theaters later this month. KEY RELEASE DATES Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018) release date: Jul 27, 2018
  6. X-Men: Dark Phoenix star Sophie Turner compared the film’s new release date to that of Black Panther. After speculation that the film was being pulled, it was revealed that Dark Phoenix was being pushed back to February 2019 due to reshoots. Box office hits like Black Panther indicate that a February release can be a good thing. Fox’s X-Men movie universe has faced its share of upheaval in recent months. Concern increased when changes were announced for the release dates of the upcoming mutant films, Dark Phoenix, Gambit, and The New Mutants. Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants are planning reshoots. Turner said she didn’t know what was being changed in Dark Phoenix. Reshoots for The New Mutants are said to be largely due to the studio’s desire to make the film scarier. In an interview with Digital Spy, Turner told them she sees the new release date as good news given the month's recent history: "All I know is that I'll be back in Montreal at some point soon, and that the Valentine's Day release date is quite a positive thing, because Black Panther got released on Valentine's Day. So we're keeping positive about it." Black Panther, which was released in February this year, was a box office success, surprising critics and proving that a film with a predominately black cast can bring audiences to the theater. But Black Panther was not the first superhero film to appear in February. Back in 2016, Deadpool was also released around Valentine’s Day, also smashing box office expectations. Most expected blockbusters drop in the summer, but these two examples changed everything by proving a good movie can draw a crowd, regardless of the time of year. Dark Phoenix could continue this trend. After the success of Deadpool, Fox appears confident in the February window, which leaves Dark Phoenix without a rival superhero film to take away potential viewers. Hopefully, the lack of competition leads to another box office hit. The next chapter in the X-Men movie universe appears to be taking a more ominous turn, beginning with the upcoming Dark Phoenix. If successes like Deadpool and Logan are anything to go by, fans of the X-Men are open to a change of pace and (in the case of Logan) more somber tone. Assuming the new release date is final, audiences can expect to spend their Valentine’s Day with the Dark Phoenix. KEY RELEASE DATES X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019) release date: Feb 14, 2019 New Mutants (2019) release date: Aug 02, 2019 Gambit (2019) release date: Jun 07, 2019
  7. Justice League storyboard artist Jay Oliva confirms that the movie's final cut assembled by Joss Whedon didn't tell the narrative that Zack Snyder was planning on telling. Over the last few months, Snyder has been taking it to his social media platform to engage with other users who continue to discuss his trio of DC Films projects (Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League). Through his interactions, it's become more apparent that he had a grand plan with several planted plot seeds that would've told an overall story broken into a few film installments. Unfortunately, most of these references were ignored, with no payoff in the theatrical version of the superhero ensemble flick, leaving fans confused. Things have started to pick-up again regarding the issue when a brand new rumor claimed Snyder may be working on releasing his cut of the movie without Warner Bros. For context, Oliva closely worked with Snyder during the conception of Justice League's story, meaning he was there while the filmmaker was crafting his overall vision for the movie. And considering that Snyder mostly has a complete plan before going into production, the artist knew more or less what the director's full version was going to be like. But like Snyder, Oliva wasn't involved in the reshoots and post-production, so he basically knows the difference between Snyder's narrative and what ultimately ended up on the big screen. In a conversation with Revenge of the Fans, Oliva shared his two cents with regard to the Release the Snyder Cut movement, voicing out people's sentiments on why they want Snyder's work on the film revealed to the public. And in the process, the artist reiterates long-running theories about how the film's final cut was significantly different from its credited director's vision. “That’s what the whole movement is about. It’s not about finishing the film it’s about showing the fans of Zack’s universe established in MoS and BvS the more accurate representation of where the story was supposed to go." Fans casting doubts on whether or not Justice League's final cut was still Snyder's story immediately started after the movie rolled out in theaters. Due to the last minute director switch that led to Joss Whedon overseeing the film's reportedly extensive reshoots, noticeable changes and omissions from previously released trailers the year before made it obvious that the project had gone through significant changes story-wise. And while Warner Bros. and the cast maintained that Snyder's vision remained intact, Olivia's latest reveal backs up these theories, more likely fueling the fire for the Release the Snyder Cut movement. Oliva's comments echo the sentiments of the countless Snyder fans who are campaigning for the release of the Snyder Cut because they genuinely want to know what Snyder's original vision was for Justice League. Considering that many of the things that would've supposedly happened in the movie was about to springboard Justice League Part 2, the film would've also significantly impacted the DCEU's future as a whole. Whether or not there's a chance that long-term vision is translated to the big screen is another conversation, especially considering that Warner Bros. is trying to veer away from the dark and broody tone that the filmmaker thrives in. But at this point, fans are only trying to know the story that Warner Bros. was initially selling to them. KEY RELEASE DATES Aquaman (2018) release date: Dec 21, 2018 Shazam! 8. Disney XD's upcoming Star Wars: Resistance animated series is reportedly slated to premiere this October, with a new piece of concept art showing off the TV show's titular characters, including Captain Phasma. The animated show comes on the heels of Star Wars Rebels' series finale earlier this year, taking the TV side of the Star Wars franchise into the time between the original and sequel trilogies. First announced back in April, Star Wars: Resistance is perhaps the most highly anticipated animated series of the year. Set in the early days of the Resistance before the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the show will be told from the viewpoint of Kazuda Xiono - a new character described as "a young pilot recruited to help spy on the First Order." Gwendoline Christie and Oscar Isaac have been confirmed as being part of the regular supporting cast, lending their voices to Captain Phasma and Poe Dameron. The regular cast will also include BB-8. While official details regarding Star Wars: Resistance have yet to release, Disney's recent event in France has shed some light on the new project, particularly that it will premiere in October. What's more, one tweet shows off character art for the new series. Take a look: Star Wars Resistance Character Art Revealed | https://t.co/Gox1PxSoBvhttps://t.co/10Bu2mu8YT#starwarsresistance #lucasfilm#RDVDisney2018pic.twitter.com/nZk1eJYKFx — Yakface (@yak_face) July 5, 2018 The still artwork has a streamlined style not unlike that utilized in previous Star Wars animated series such as Forces of Destiny. This seems to contradict earlier reports, which suggested that Star Wars: Resistance would make use of an "anime-inspired style." Granting that as a rather vague description and the wide variety of art styles that might be considered "anime-inspired", it had been assumed that the show creators would be utilizing a more expressive style with big eyes, small mouths, and elongated bodies. The still artwork for Star Wars: Resistance looks quite compact and blocky by comparison. It bears consideration, however, that the finished artwork could look quite different once it is in motion and that the still photo we see could be an test drawing rather than the final product. There is also little resemblance between the figures in the art preview and the cute little BB-8 seen in the title card for Star Wars: Resistance. Given that, it seems unwise to make any judgement calls until the first actual footage of the show is released. Hopefully, Star Wars fans will not have to wait a long time for such a preview to surface.
  9. A new poster for The Walking Dead season 9 teases Washington, D.C. as a new setting, while also hinting at a time jump. Fans know big changes are in store for AMC's zombie drama when it returns this fall for its ninth season. The biggest change will see Andrew Lincoln, the show's lead actor since the very first episode, exiting the role of Rick Grimes. With Lincoln departing, former Walking Dead actor Jon Bernthal will return for a one episode appearance as Shane, likely in a dream sequence or hallucination. In another major shake-up, Maggie Rhee actress Lauren Cohan will have a greatly reduced role in season 9, appearing in just a handful of episodes. Story-wise, the show is expected to settle down after the relentless action of season 8's All Out War arc, with less fighting and more building (no doubt with help from the plans Georgie left with the Hilltop). Putting down the guns and picking up the hammers will, of course, be a lot easier now that Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) has been captured and his incarnation of the Saviors disbanded. So, the series can now go in several different directions - and now one of them is being teased. With The Walking Dead set to grace SDCC later this month, AMC has released a teaser poster that gives fans a few tantalizing hints about what might be in store for the show in season 9. Most intriguingly, the poster indicates that Washington, D.C. may be one of the settings for the new season. For the past few years, the show has been set in and around Alexandria, Virgina, a suburb near the nation's capital, but D.C. itself has yet to be shown. See the image below: Besides the sight of the crumbling post-apocalyptic Capitol dome, the art offers up a few other interesting details that point to possible future developments. Just above Michonne's left shoulder, there's a silhouette of a helicopter - which has shown up randomly during the course of the show - thus offering a potential hint that audiences might finally get an answer to who is flying it. Another hint is provided by Rick and Maggie's hair. Rick, for the first time in a while, is looking well-groomed, and Maggie has also grown her hair out much longer than it was in season 8. Does this mean a time-jump is in the offing? In fact, showrunner Angela Kang recently revealed that a time jump will happen at some point in season 9, but this seems to indicate it will be sooner rather than later. Depending on how big a time-jump the show executes, it's possible that, when the new season arrives, Maggie will have already had the baby she has been carrying since season 7 (by the end of season 8 she still wasn't showing). As for Rick, the big question is how and when the character will exit the show, now that Andrew Lincoln is officially leaving. Recent rumors indicated that Rick would die at the hands of a walker herd relatively early in the season, but a social media posting by an official Walking Dead account seemed to debunk this story, which was originally circulated by a fan site known for spreading spoilers. Fans now seemingly know that Washington, D.C. will figure into the action of season 9. Given that the group has been headed in that direction ever since leaving the vicinity of Atlanta several seasons ago, it's an arrival that has been a long time coming. Interestingly, though the city of D.C. does figure into the comics, being a target for occasional supply runs, it's never been central to the storyline. The show of course deviates from The Walking Dead comics whenever it pleases (the death of Carl being the biggest deviation of all), so perhaps the nation's capital will prove to be a major setting when The Walking Dead season 9 arrives. The Walking Dead season 9 premieres on AMC in October.
  10. The Netflix science fiction series, Lost in Space, will start production on season 2 in September. The re-imagining of Irwin Allen's original 1960s TV series debuted on Netflix in April earlier this year and became an instant hit, so much that Netflix renewed Lost in Space for a second season about a month after its premiere. Lost in Space returned to television with a new cast headlined by actors such as Toby Stephens, Molly Parker, and Parker Posey. The first season chronicled the past and present of the Robinson family as they are one of the families chosen for re-colonization on a distant planet. When their space travels go awry, the family must stick together, form alliances with strangers, and survive an alien planet with life forms - both human and robot - they are unsure they can trust. It's a sci-fi series that resonated well with audiences, which is why Netflix is already getting started on season 2. According to Omega Underground, Lost in Space season 2 will enter production on September 4 in Vancouver and continue through the fall and winter until March 1. Although a premiere date hasn't been announced yet, it is likely the season 2 not stream on Netflix until fall of 2019 at the earliest, based on production dates, as well as time for post-production and marketing. Season 1 left fans with a cliffhanger ending. The Robinsons were planning their escape from the alien planet they had found themselves stranded. But there were other, possibly sinister, forces at work. Just when as the Robinsons seemed to be back on track, an alien engine hurled the family through space to a strange new alien solar system, thus leaving fans wondering where the Robinsons were. What's more, the ending could indicate that the Robinsons were stranded for good this time. For season 1, the show was structured in a way that had the characters calling back to the past, impacting how they treated circumstances in their present. In season 2, the writers may choose to follow that structure or take the series in a new direction, one that befits a new world. With season 2 now gearing up for filming, fans can expect to meet the Robinsons in space, completely lost. There will, undoubtedly, be more going into the robot and alien engine storyline, trying to determine what lead to their inception and how they will play a role in the future. Netflix has already revealed their spending for 2018, of which some will be going towards Lost in Space. After all, it's just one of the many popular original shows Netflix has to offer. And with the company's model of binge watching, fans can go back to fill the black holes left from season 1 and prepare for when season 2 officially lifts off. Lost in Space season 2 does not yet have a premiere date.
  11. Netflix is testing out a new tier, titled Ultra, in Europe. The streaming service has been growing in popularity since its inception. Curating a list of new titles roughly every month and adding to their own content, Netflix is constantly reinventing the streaming wheel. Other streaming services may be trying to keep up, but Netflix has a new model they are testing out for viability that could continue to change and add to the platform. Netflix was founded in 1997 and has grown as a juggernaut in film and television since. Since being introduced to the public, Netflix has grown and changed rapidly from being a source to rent movies to producing its own shows and films. The streaming service has a constant flow of new titles, with new projects being developed all the time. The success has even brought critical acclaim and award nominations from the Emmys, Academy Awards, and Golden Globes, among others. But the streaming service is constantly finding ways to change streaming and adapt to what consumers want. According to Italian blog Tutto Android, Netflix has begun to test a possible change to their platform with Ultra. The latest tier would give consumers the opportunity to have four devices receiving Ultra HD video and audio streaming simultaneously. The company is currently testing their plans with two versions at two different price points. One version would offer four Ultra HD streams at the equivalent of $19.80, while the existing $13.99 Premium plan would drop from four to two UHD streams. Commenting on the recent plans in an email to CNET, Netflix spokeswoman Smita Saran said, “We continuously test new things at Netflix and these tests typically vary in length of time. In this case, we are testing slightly different price points and features to better understand how consumers value Netflix." While the new plan is being tested in Europe, not all Netflix subscribers will have the opportunity to see the test. Adding to this, the company may not ever offer the specific price points or features being tested. Netflix, like all streaming services, is evolving. Whether it's adding new shows or acquiring the rights to existing ones, the team at Netflix is always finding ways to improve its service. As of now, subscribers are offered three subscription plans. Basic, at $7.99, a $10.99 Standard, and a Premium subscription plan at the price point $13.99. Basic only allows users to watch Netflix on one screen at a time. Standard gives subscribers viewing on two screens of their choice, and Premium allows four screens. Subscribers can watch their favorite shows or movies on their cellphone, TV, or laptop. Moving forward, the company will likely continue to test their Ultra model. Netflix reaches globally, having various titles in different countries. Moving forward, the outcome may change Netflix's plan. Still, the streaming service is constantly adapting, and this is just another example of how.
  12. Games of Thrones' very own Sophie Turner, otherwise known around Westeros as Sansa Stark, believes that fans will find the show's conclusion both unpredictable and satisfying. Game of Thrones is currently wrapping up the filming of its eighth and final season while fans endure an extended wait to find out exactly how the mega-popular HBO fantasy series will end. Season seven featured huge character deaths, unlikely alliances and shocking secrets and as a result, Game of Thrones' farewell outing is set to focus squarely on the future of the Iron Throne and the impending threat of the White Walkers. Exactly how that ending will play out, however, remains a closely guarded secret among the cast and crew of Game of Thrones. Jaime Lannister actor, Nicolaj Coster-Waldau, recently revealed that the show's season eight scripts are only given to actors digitally and automatically delete themselves upon completion of filming of scene. And while the main cast of Thrones obviously need to know the show's ending, supporting actors have been left to guess, with Joe Dempsie (Gendry) claiming that he only thinks he knows how the story will finish. Understandably, HBO appears very keen to avoid more of the episode and script leak that have plagued recent seasons of the show. One actress very much in the know is Sophie Turner who, in a recent interview with Digital Spy, gave her thoughts on the ending to Game of Thrones. The Sansa Stark actress claimed: "For me - without giving anything away, I guess - I was satisfied with how unpredictable the show's ending really is. People have come up with so many fan theories about how it's going to end and who will end up where and who will end up with who. It really is so unpredictable the way that it ends up. I'm very satisfied with that and I think that the fans will be satisfied with that too." Clearly, Turner has been well-drilled in not giving away spoilers (despite recent suggestions by fans that the actress' latest tattoo was a plot hint) and she provided just enough of an update to keep viewers eagerly awaiting the show's continuation but without dropping any significant indications as to the actual plot. Assuming Turner is right about the unpredictability of the Thrones finale though, fans can perhaps rule out a more straight-forward ending along the lines of Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen defeating Cersei, fending off the White Walkers and living happily ever after with Jon in charge of the North and Dany ruling over everywhere else. However, it's worth considering just how "unpredictable" Game of Thrones can actually be at this point, when online theories have more or less covered every possible eventuality. With the HBO adaptation having now overtaken George R. R. Martin's series of novels, the problem of book readers anticipating certain key events has long gone at least, but so feverish is the speculation surrounding the Game of Thrones ending that for it to be truly unpredictable the show would almost need to swerve fans for the sake of it - a criticism recently leveled at the second season of Westworld. Many would argue that it's better to deliver a predictable but high-quality ending than a divisive one that fans didn't see coming. Game of Thrones season eight is expected to premiere in 2019 on HBO.
  13. Legendary Entertainment announces plans to develop a live-action Gundam movie in partnership with Japanese animation studio Sunrise. The Gundam franchise is an iconic brand that got its start almost 40 years ago in 1979, focusing on giant robots and suits called Gundam. Like most major science fiction properties, it got its start on television, but in the form of an anime called Mobile Suit Gundam that aired for only one year. However, that single year became the impetus for an enormous franchise. Sunrise has produced dozens of Gundam TV shows and movies over the years, as well as video games, manga, and ultra expensive models, which have all propelled the value of the overall franchise into the billions. But it's worth noting that the vast majority of all those adaptations were animated, with only one live-action version coming in 2000, called G-Saviour. It wasn't particularly groundbreaking for the franchise considering it released only as a Canadian TV movie, but that's something Legendary is looking to change with their adaptation. Legendary and Sunrise announced their intentions to make a live-action Gundam movie at Anime Expo 2018. While the film's story is being kept under wraps at this time, it was revealed that Pacific Rim Uprising producer Cale Boyter will be overseeing production on the project, which is being hailed as the first-ever live-action adaptation of the franchise. Again, since G-Saviour released as a TV movie, the statement is technically correct. While Legendary's project will mark the first live-action Gundam movie to grace the big screen, it won't be the first time that the character/creation has appeared in a live-action movie before. Earlier this year, a Gundam was temporarily featured in Steven Spielberg's VR-focused film, Ready Player One. However, seeing as the Gundam appeared while the characters were immersed in the video game OASIS, could it really count as the series' first live-action appearance? Aside from that point, the film's story is the main point of interest. Unfortunately, there isn't much to glean from the anime TV shows, movies, or comics since there's too much to pull from. But it's possible that the film will draw inspiration from the original anime. As for the live-action bit, it will be interesting to see what Legendary does this time around, considering their irregular success with properties such as Pacific Rim and Warcraft, among other things. They certainly have the capability of launching a full-fledged Gundam movie franchise, that's for sure, but whether or not they're able to succeed in their endeavor is something else entirely
  14. Some of those who have seen of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom may have had an issue with its big twist concerning the character of Maisie, but the individual that first put the franchise on the map, Steven Spielberg, completely approves. The climax of Jurassic World 2 saw the big reveal that Maisie was not, in fact, the granddaughter of Benjamin Lockwood, but a clone of Lockwood's daughter. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is directed by J.A. Bayona and written by Derek Connolly and Colin Trevorrow, and it serves as a sequel to the 2015's Jurassic World. The sequel follows Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire and Chris Pratt’s Owen as they return to Isla Nublar to help save the dinosaurs from extinction due to an active volcanic eruption. During their journey, they uncover a huge conspiracy plot that threatens the entire human race. Maisie was a supporting character played by Isabella Sermon who lived in the Lockwood mansion, the site of the film’s big conspiracy plot and climactic chaos. She is first presented as just a typical young girl obsessed with dinosaurs, but Jurassic World 2's twist is consistently foreshadowed and later revealed that she's actually a clone. In an interview with Empire about Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Trevorrow says that Steven Spielberg, who directed the first two Jurassic Park movies, has expressed enthusiastic support for the Maisie plot twist. “[Spielberg] really dug the Maisie element of it. He dug the way that we were evolving it, and he was really excited about the questions that it leaves at the end as far as where the future could go," he explained. Apparently, Spielberg is a fan of the Maisie subplot because he feels that the film’s commentary on the dangers of human innovation through a sci-fi twist is loyal to Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park novel, which provided the source material for his own 1993 film and was all about cautioning readers against genetic engineering. Trevorrow continued to defend the Maisie twist, claiming that there was a larger thematic significance in her being a clone. The director referenced Jeff Goldblum’s cameo where his character Dr. Ian Malcolm testifies in a U.S. Senate hearing about the role of humans in the world as well as the “irrevocable change” triggered by humankind’s modern innovations. Trevorrow said that Maisie’s clone reveal is this very change that Malcolm warns against, and it served as a concrete example separate from the dinosaurs that emphasizes the important themes of the film. Even with the support of Steven Spielberg, the creators of Jurassic World: Fallen Kindgom may be hard-pressed to change the minds of their film’s critics. Despite the fact that the film was a confident box office success, the Jurassic World sequel saw a marked decline at the box office in only its second weekend in theaters. This could be a result of the film’s vocal critics, many of whom argue that Fallen Kingdom's clunky ending (especially the Maisie reveal) was confusing, and the sequel's storyline was off-brand for the franchise. But it looks like that controversial twist will become a significant factor in the next installment. KEY RELEASE DATES Jurassic World 3 (2021) release date: Jun 11, 2021
  15. Joe Johnston will receive credit as director for the forthcoming Disney film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. Disney is bringing back the timeless Christmas story for an early November release, starring Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Mackenzie Foy as Clara. The story of The Nutcracker has had many iterations over the years. Originally entitled The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, the story was written in 1816 by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann. However, the most popular version of the holiday story is The Nutcracker ballet. A two-act ballet, it was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The ballet premiered in December 1892 and has retained popularity ever since. Disney's new adaptation of the story, written by Ashleigh Powell and Simon Beaufoy, is directed by Lasse Hallström... and Joe Johnston. As reported by THR, the Director's Guild of America (DGA) is making an exception to its usual rule and granting director credit to both Hallström and Johnston. The DGA has consistently allowed only one director credit, with the exception of established teams, like Joel and Ethan Coen, Joe and Anthony Russo, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, for example. The criteria for determining director credit is the amount of time the director commits to the project for pre-production, shooting, and post-production. In the case of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, Johnston filled the role of director during a 32-day reshoot when Hallström was unavailable, which was enough to earn him final credit. In a statement, Johnston said: "I watched an early cut of The Nutcracker and The Four Realms, and I saw something unique and fresh. When I was asked to direct the remaining elements, I saw an opportunity to complete Lasse's wonderful and wildly inventive vision. I know we'll both be proud of the end result." It seems that both directors are happy with the outcome. Discussing the recent decision, Hallström expressed elation, saying, “It was an absolute blessing to have Joe Johnston step in when it became clear that I wouldn’t be available for reshoots. Joe is the ultimate expert in visual effects and I enjoyed collaborating with him on this film." Hallström's background comes from dramas such as What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Cider House Rules, whereas Johnston comes from a very technical, visual effects based background, having gotten his start in filmmaking by working for Lucasfilm's visual effects department on the original Star Wars movies. With both directors viewing the outcome in a more than positive light, it will be a real treat for fans of both filmmakers to see their names when the credits roll. Hallström's name will be first on the title card and Johnston's will follow. Still, the order doesn't seem to matter to either director. The DGA can be strict on their rules, and notably has granted Bryan Singer the sole director credit for Bohemian Rhapsody even when Dexter Fletcher shot 16 days following Singer's exit. But the positive partnership between Hallström and Johnston has paid off in each of their favor. Fans can see the final product when The Nutcracker and the Four Realms hits theaters later this year. 16. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige says that Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange won't cameo in next year's Spider-Man: Far From Home. Last year, Jon Watts' Spider-Man: Homecoming featured a small role from Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark, who has played a mentor figure for Tom Holland's new incarnation of the wall-crawler in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While that relationship was something that fans enjoyed, it was reported that Iron Man wouldn't appear in the sequel, but that didn't mean a different MCU character couldn't appear in his stead. Spider-Man: Far From Home will feature Mysterio as the main villain, and, as a result, a common theory has been that the major cameo will be Doctor Strange - a real sorcerer to take on a fake magician. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Slashfilm had an opportunity to speak to Feige about this rumor. To their surprise, he openly debunked it. "I could be coy about it," he replied, "but no... I don’t wanna get people excited. But Benedict and Holland have liked the idea of working together." It's unusual for Feige to give such a willing response to a question, but in this case, there's probably a good reason. Assuming there is indeed a major cameo - which still seems highly likely - it can't be long before it becomes public knowledge. Spider-Man: Far From Home has already begun filming in London, and any major Marvel actors are likely to be spotted on set fairly soon. Ironically enough, Feige refused to play ball and even confirm that there will, indeed, be a cameo, despite that being a common belief at this stage. Marvel is currently attempting to persuade viewers that the deaths in Avengers: Infinity War will be lasting, even though a Spider-Man sequel is currently being filmed. They're doing this by hinting that the movie may actually be set before Infinity War. Unfortunately, that argument runs up against explicit statements from both producer Amy Pascal and even Feige himself. In interviews last year, Pascal stated that the sequel will be set minutes after Avengers 4. Feige, for his part, said that Peter Parker would introduce viewers to a new MCU. It's clear that next year's Avengers 4 will somehow see the "snap" either averted or undone. No doubt Feige is very wary of making any other statements, given he may well spoil other Avengers 4 surprises. 17. A subreddit dedicated to Thanos has decided to honor him by banning half its users. While many turned to the internet to express their shock at the end of Infinity War, some have decided to play devil’s advocate and throw their support behind the Mad Titan. This is despite there being evidence the villain is lying about the potential benefits of his methods. In Infinity War, Thanos claimed he was helping the universe avoid a similar fate to his home planet, Titan, which crumbled due to overpopulation. With the power of the Infinity Stones, he would indiscriminately wipe out half of the population. Considering Infinity War's massive $2 billion box office total, it shouldn't come as any surprise Thanos has quickly become a pop culture staple. Shortly after the film's release, a website that told visitors if they were killed by Thanos was launched, allowing fans to see which of their friends would survive the genocidal snap. Now, a subreddit community is taking things a step further by actually banning half of its members. The ThanosDidNothingWrong subreddit intends to ban half of its users as a tribute to the villain. Even though the site's administrators are not pleased with the idea, the mods are moving ahead with the plan to emulate Thanos' snap at the end of Infinity War, eliminating over 100,000 people (at the time of this writing). The-Jedi-Apprentice, one of the subreddit's mods, explained how it was all going to go down: “[A Reddit-Admin] told me that doing a massive ban the day before July 4 was a terrible idea, because many of Reddit’s engineers would be out with their families. Also, the engineers would not be prepared for a mass ban so close to it. However, I presented a solution to these two problems, and now I have their permission to ban half the sub! The random 50% ban will take place on July 9th. The admins are designing a bot for me that will allow me to do the job in a quick and easy manner.” For those who end up being “saved” by Thanos and are banned from the subreddit, the joke can continue. New subreddits called r/SoulWorld and r/InTheSoulStone exist as a new home for those who respect the ban. The titles refer to a popular theory about Infinity War where all those who disintegrated ended up inside the Soul Stone. In the comics, the Soul Stone serves as a gateway to an idyllic pocket universe that resides within the stone itself. Fans got a glimpse of the Soul World in Infinity War when Thanos was briefly taken to an orange skied peaceful realm where a young Gamora was waiting. Update: The front page of Reddit was taken over by multiple updates to this Thanos subreddit situation, including a petition for Josh Brolin (who plays Thanos) to do the ban himself. Ever since news spread of the plan for a playful reenactment of Infinity War, Marvel fans have been joining the subreddit in droves. The community serves as a place where likeminded members can meet and bond over one of the most heartbreaking MCU installments in a tongue and cheek way. Users will learn their fates on July 9, when the biggest ban in Reddit history is going to occur.
