SBI Group – one of Tokyo’s most innovative financial services giants – is set to launch Japan’s first crypto fund, granting investors the opportunity to expose their portfolios to digital assets such as Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. The proposed fund, which would be set up under the operations of SBI Digital Asset Holdings – a subsidy of the parental SBI Holdings – will launch in November and is expected to involve a substantial investment in the hundreds of millions. Japan is infamous for its strict crypto regulatory environment. There are only a handful of crypto assets available legally to Japanese retail investors – Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), Ripple (XRP), and most recently Cardano (ADA). Cardano was recently approved by the air-tight Japanese financial watchdog – a significant and exclusive accomplishment. SBI CEO Tomoya Asakura highlighted how the launch of the first crypto fund in Japan will make it significantly easier for Japanese capital to enter into crypto markets under the management of a team that can balance the volatility of cryptocurrencies with the tough demands of regulators. “I want people to hold it together with other assets and experience first hand how useful it can be for diversifying portfolios,” he said. “There is an overwhelming perception that cryptocurrencies are highly volatile and speculative. “If our first fund goes very well, we’d like to move quickly.” SBI Digital Asset Holdings is already heavily-involved with the Japanese crypto sector, the institutional financier currently operates two exchanges – SBI VC Trade and the TaoTao platform – alongside further interests in both cryptocurrency mining and liquidity provision.

Ether was trading above $4,000 on Friday, on a path to potentially return to its all-time high of $4,380 in May, while bitcoin has risen above $51,000. Solana, the seventh largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, reached its all-time high of $150.6. The price rallies of ether and Solana, which are both smart-contract blockchains that allow developers to build applications on the networks, were partly driven by the explosive growth of decentralized finance, or DeFi, protocols and nonfungible tokens, according to several analysts. For bitcoin BTCUSD, +0.72%, exchange balances are falling again, which is usually viewed as a bullish sign, Matthew Blom, global head of sales and trading at crypto exchange EQONEX, wrote in a Thursday note. Ether’s price ETHUSD, +0.07% surge could also be attributed to Ethereum’s recent “London hard fork” upgrade, which includes Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 1559, analysts say. The changes aim to alter the way transaction fees, or “gas fees,” are calculated, and have been reducing ether’s supply. “The recent market rebound has also fuelled speculations of an upswing in ether tokens, with increased trading volumes fuelling the price action,” Pavel Shkitin, CEO of cryptocurrency exchange Nominex wrote in an email to MarketWatch recently. “As a result, we will most likely have a speculative rise in the price of ether.”

Eastern Europe has become a hotbed for cryptocurrency scams, according to a new analysis, with addresses in the region having a high rate of exposure to illicit transactions — second to only Africa. A new report from Chainalysis, a blockchain forensics firm, mapped out the crypto crime landscape of Eastern Europe over the past year. Notably, a little-known billion dollar Ponzi scheme called Finiko accounted for more than half of funds in the region sent to scam addresses. Indeed, crypto scams emanating from the region's 290 million strong population are only dwarfed by the continent of Africa, which has a far larger estimated population — 1.3 billion people. According to the report, illegal crypto activity made up 0.5 percent of total crypto value, or more than $400 million sent and received from Eastern Europe. With a market capitalization already at $2 trillion, half a percent of all the region’s crypto transactions is concerning to say the least, said Tyler Moffitt, a senior security analyst with Canada-based information security company, OpenText. “Even if the market continues to rise every four or five years, illicit crypto flows should only keep growing, especially in places like Eastern Europe where cybercrime is abundant,” he added. And the stakes are higher as scams proliferate. In the past year, the Russia-based Ponzi scheme and exit scam called Finiko dominated Eastern Europe’s illicit crypto flows. According to Chainanalysis' report, more than 60% of all cryptocurrency sent from the region went to addresses attributed to “TheFiniko.com.” An exit scam is a crypto-based trap whereby promoters (or founders) of an online business vanish without returning investor holdings. Well known perpetrators include the high-yield investment program and cryptocurrency, Bitconnect; and Canada-based bitcoin exchange, Quadriga, which lost $215 million of customer funds after its founder mysteriously died on his honeymoon.

According to CoinMarketCap data, Bitcoin brushed the $51,000 price level after seeing a price increase of over 5% from its 24-hour low of $48,457 up to $50,912. According to market analyst Michaël Van De Poppe, the final resistance before Bitcoin can resume the bullish trend is located in the $50,712 area, while the RSI currently standing at 61.69 already invalidated the bearish divergence signal by falling under 70. Van De Poppe also explained in his recent YouTube video that when "Bitcoin is breaking out of this $51,000 level, the chances are that we just get one vertical candle towards $58,000, or even $60,000." In this case, he believes that altcoins would heavily lose value against Bitcoin and not keep the pace. The buy and sell levels contained in the order book of the world's top crypto exchange Binance show a particularly high sell volume at the $51,000 level, with another couple concentrated seller areas before $52,000. Then, there is no comparable concentrated seller aria until the $60,000 area.

Most Salvadorans oppose the government's decision to make Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) a legal tender in the country alongside the United States dollar. What Happened: According to a Reuters report, a poll by the local university Central American University showed that at least 67.9% of 1,281 people disagree or strongly disagree with the use of Bitcoin as a legal tender. Only over 32% of the survey participant said that they agree with the decision, at least to some extent. The study was issued just days before El Salvador's Bitcoin adoption becomes effective on Sept 7. The poll was carried out in August and also showed that nine out of 10 people did not have a clear understanding of Bitcoin, and eight out of 10 had little to no confidence in its use. Lastly, seven out of 10 said that they believe lawmakers should repeal the law making Bitcoin a legal tender.
